"Carlos did an awesome job removing our very old and thick popcorn ceiling in a large room with a 20â ceiling with skylights. He painted the ceiling as well as the walls and everything looks fabulous. We will definitely have him back for future renovations."

"I had heard from several dry wall companies on my project and was able to talk to Sam over the phone and on the phone call I realized Hoffman Drywall was the company I wanted for the job. He was able to give me a ballpark quote when other companies wouldn't while he was on the job working and just from my conversation I realized he was the professional I wanted to hire. He over exceeded my expectations by far, he is a master of his craft, worked so meticulously on every little detail of the job. Our ceiling was plaster in half of the area and it was tied into an old garage with many joints. That is why the popcorn ceiling was put in to hide all of the imperfections but years later it looked so outdated. Sam works tirelessly, I have never seen anything like it, very professional and courteous, he communicates with each phase of the job as to issues he is running into, what it is going to take to complete it. I would highly recommend Hoffman Drywall for any drywall job, I rarely write reviews, it is only in the very rare instances where a company goes above and beyond and Sam did! Paul Cordova"

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. The primary drawbacks include an outdated appearance, difficulty with cleaning and maintenance, and potential health risks, as ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos. As design trends have shifted toward sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now prefer smooth ceilings for their clean look and easier upkeep. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections. Some also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective solution. Ultimately, whether they are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and aesthetic goals.

It is often less expensive to cover a popcorn ceiling instead of removing it. Installing drywall costs $1.50 to $3 per square foot, whereas popcorn ceiling removal averages $7 per square foot. Another option may be installing beadboard panels over top, giving your ceiling a fresh and modern look.

The cost of application ranges from $1 to $3 per square foot, depending on the presence of asbestos and the difficulty of removal.

Most handy homeowners can tackle removing texture from unpainted walls. Removing texture from painted walls is a bit trickier. Paint acts as a sealant, so you can’t soften the texture with water. Instead, you’ll have to add a layer of drywall compound known as a skim coat. This process is messy and takes some practice.

Priming a popcorn ceiling before painting is a good idea, especially if the ceiling is stained, discolored, or has never been painted. Interior paint primer helps seal the surface, preventing stains from bleeding through and allowing the paint to adhere better. Use a stain-blocking, water-based primer for best results.
