"We had a separate outlet installed for a freezer. Precise Electric did an excellent job finding a straightforward path from the electrical panel to the location for the new outlet with minimal damage to our home. We also really appreciated their flexibility to complete the installation quickly. We would highly recommend them."

"Front Range Electric did an awesome job for us at a great price. Nick, their electrician on site, was very helpful, he listened to our issues, made recommendations, stepped us through his work explaining everything as he went along. We couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant experience and highly recommend them."

"Jesse reviewed the circuit breaker issue that I was having. He fully understood the problem and let me know what the options were. He advised me that it was something that I could do myself, but I chose to have him do it, as he offered a very reasonable price and I felt I'd rather have a professional do the job. He was most pleasant to work with. I will keep his info in case I have any other electrical problems in the future. I recommend Persistence Electric to anyone having electrical problems."

"I spent 40 years in the construction industry as a general contractor. I'd rate American Electric among the top 5 electrical companies I've ever worked with. Professional service, extensive knowledge of the trade and current codes, and real value for service. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat."

"I hired Adam to install a light fixture to go over my pool table. I should mention that Adam is a Master Electrician. He does EXCELLENT work at a very reasonable price!!! I used to use bigger contractors to do all my electrical work [usually an apprentice was sent out]. Adam did a fantastic job. I will use only Adam for all my electrical work from now on. He is very professional and honest. I would highly recommend him to anyone who asks me. The fact that Adam is a Master Electrician and does the work made me feel very comfortable that the job would be done right. He is a 10 out of 10 in my opinion!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A standard three-prong electrical outlet typically lasts for about 15 years with normal use and should be replaced accordingly. GFCI outlets may have a longer lifespan of 15 to 25 years. While some outlets can last longer if used infrequently, they can also fail prematurely. Reasons for early failure include poor wiring, an overloaded circuit, improper grounding or installation, or loose plugs. Signs that an outlet is failing include flickering lights, overheating, a discolored or melted faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, or frequently tripping circuit breakers. It is essential to address faulty outlets promptly to avoid safety hazards, especially in homes older than 15 years.

First, check the current electrical code in your area to ensure spaces you’re considering meet the requirements. After that, your outlet’s location is up to you. If you’re moving it to hide wiring, you may want to move it in a spot that will also be hidden from view, such as behind a media center or table. As long as you meet the spacing guidelines set by electrical codes, you should be able to pick any spot in your home for an outlet.

Grounding is an essential part of installing an electric fence. Without grounding, the electrical circuit will be incomplete. That means the fence won’t work and will fail at delivering shocks upon impact. Even grounding the fence improperly can cause faulty shocks, if any. To ground the fence, you will need to use ground rods, ideally made from copper or galvanized metal, that are at least 4 feet high, for best results.

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter, which means it has the ability to detect a ground fault and shut the circuit down before it creates hazards. General breakers may also do that because ground faults can cause overloads, but they’re more focused on amp overloads from any cause. GFCIs are often installed in specific outlets, but breakers can come with GFCI capabilities built in for broader ground fault protection.

The most common gauge for indoor outlets around your home is 12- and 14-gauge wires. But if you’re working with larger appliances like ovens, washing machines, or dryers (all of which require more amplitude), you might find 10-, eight-, or six-gauge wires to help support those hefty appliances.
