"Contacted Current Electric on the recommendation of a friend who had utilized their service and was pleased with the end result. Did not check prices with other companies, so not sure how reasonable the rate was. The circuit and 2 outlets installed in the soffet on the back of home was $589 for comparison. Technician came out on a holiday to provide estimate. Was quick and thorough. Received phone call to schedule service date within ~30 minutes. Technician arrived on time the day of install and performed work very quickly. Entire experience was quick, professional, and friendly. Price matched provided estimate."

"This was a great experience and I would recommend them to anyone needing electrical work done. When I called on a Saturday my call was answered promptly and Cory was able to arrange to come over the same day to give a quote. He was very friendly, professional, and courteous. He was also able to complete the job within one day which was super helpful to us. I was initially very nervous about picking a random electrician from an online search but ended up being very happy we picked Ultra Electric Inc. If we have additional projects we will definitely use them again."

"The service went great! They answered the phone when I called and they were able to accommodate my schedule. A licensed electrician came out and provided me with a reasonable price. I had three quotes and I went with them which was in the middle. It was a job well done and the electrician was great. I felt I had nothing to worry about with JM Electric and they stand by their work!"

"I was so impressed with this company. Their electricians actually knew what they were doing. I had a different company come for a service call, and they had not a clue what to do with my electrical box. The switches were even labeled. I will only use Red Fox for any electrical issues in the future."

"We are so happy to have found an electrical company that we will call back. JM Electric was very responsive, very friendly, and they were happy with their work only when they knew we were happy with the work. Will definitely call them again when the need arises."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Aluminum wiring can pose a fire risk as it can overheat, expand, and contract, leading to failing splices and loose connections. If your home has aluminum wiring, it requires careful maintenance and potential safety upgrades. The first step is to hire a licensed electrician to conduct a thorough inspection.

A complete replacement with copper wire is the safest option but can be very expensive and is not always necessary. Other safety measures and upgrades include:

  • Copper Pigtailing: A more budget-friendly option where a short section of copper wire is added to each end of the aluminum wire. This is only appropriate for certain homes.

  • Aluminum-Compatible Outlets: Installing outlets specifically designed for use with aluminum wiring.

  • Anti-Oxidant Paste: Applying this paste to connections to prevent oxidation.

Consulting with a qualified electrician is essential to assess the condition of your wiring and determine the most appropriate updates to meet current safety standards.

Yes, you can get shocked while using a multimeter if:

  • You touch the metal tip while testing a live current.

  • The meter isn’t properly rated for the voltage.

  • The meter picks up on transient voltage that’s above the range you’ve set.

  • The meter has defective parts.

You can prevent shock and personal injury by using a multimeter properly and maintaining your device.

If you’re unsure how to use a multimeter or want help with your project, contact a local electrician to get the job done.

It’s possible to distinguish a positive black wire from a negative black wire if you know what type of circuit the wires are in. If it’s an alternating current (AC), then black wires are positive. If it’s a direct current (DC), then black wires are negative.

Sometimes, a circuit has two black wires. In that case, the positive black wire will be solid black while the negative black wire will have a white stripe on it. If you’re still unsure, you can use a multimeter to check.

A multimeter does not measure frequency, charge, inductance, and other electrical quantities. Instead, it measures voltage (AC and DC), current, and resistance.

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), GFCI outlets should be installed in wet or damp locations where they might be splashed with water or other liquids. This is to protect against ground faults, which are more common around water. Specific areas that require GFCI outlets include kitchens (especially near counters), bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages, and all outdoor receptacles. Depending on local electrical codes, you may need at least one GFCI outlet in these rooms, or every outlet in the area may need to be GFCI protected.
