"Our main water line was leaking with hardly any pressure to our house. Upon calling Holmes Excavation the Friday before Christmas, they were up at our house within 90 minutes. After agreeing to their services, they arranged for the locate services for electric, gas, and phone before the end of the day and before the weekend to prepare for their work starting on Monday. Our water service was restored by the end of the day on Monday, and they finished backfilling the next day--2 days before Christmas! While their equipment was still at our house, my wife asked if they could pull out some nasty roots from her garden. They did so without hesitation and I was able to cross that off of my "to do" list and saving my back for another project. To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

It takes recycled asphalt 48 hours to initially harden and up to 3 months to fully cure. It’s best to stay off of recycled asphalt for at least 48 hours, then you can walk or drive standard vehicles on it. Hold off on driving heavy trucks or equipment on it for at least 7 days. Allowing the surface to melt together and harden ensures that the surface stays durable and long-lasting. 

Sealing coat asphalt after 6-12 months and then every 2-3 years is recommended.

To maintain their strength, asphalt driveways and parking lots need to be sealcoated once every two to five years. You may also need to reapply paint striping every few years as it fades to ensure drivers can safely navigate the parking lot.
