I'm pretty handy at most tasks, I went to the University of Nebraska for construction and business management. I have been doing this kind of work since the early 2000s, I have built multiple single-family homes from the ground up as well as a few commercial projects. Replacing cast iron pipes can take anywhere between a few hours to more than five weeks to complete, depending on the project's scope. Small projects like simply replacing a pipe in your kitchen or sink can be accomplished in one day. Meanwhile, extensive underground projects will take much longer to complete and are weather-dependent.

Depending on the home, wastewater either goes into a septic tank and seeps back into the backyard or is sent via sewer system to a local sewage-treatment plant. Septic systems naturally separate different components of the waste so that it can naturally and safely disperse it. They are usually reserved for homes not served by a municipal sewage department (like rural homes). A treatment plant, on the other hand, speeds up that process through screening and purification.

Sewage ejector pumps, with help from gravity, pump wastewater and solid wastes to the home’s main sewer line if you have water-using fixtures located belowground—like a basement bathroom or laundry room, for instance. If all of your water appliances are above ground, gravity should be able to perform this function on its own, but for those with finished basements including these fixtures, a sewage ejector pump is essential.

Outdoor plumbing issues are no less serious or urgent to fix than interior plumbing problems. These problems may require excavation and lawn repair due to the plumbing often being buried underground. The most common outside plumbing problems include:

  • Clogged landscape drainage: $200–$1,000

  • Clogged sewer lines: $60–$250 per linear foot

  • Corroded or rusted pipes: $1,500–$15,000+

  • Leaking drain lines: $200–$1,000

  • Leaking water mains: $300–$4,000+

  • Septic system failure: $600–$3,000+

  • Tree roots in pipes: $200–$1,000

  • Well pump failure: $350–$1,500

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.
