"Juan did a complete remodel of one of our baths. It was a half bath and now we added a shower. He was professional, on time, and kept us up to date on the progress. He communicated clearly and if there were any changes along the way he made sure we were aware of what needed to be done and why. He did an excellent job and turned a dull old bath into a sleek/modern luxury bath. The space was small so he helped me realize my vision of what I wanted the bathroom to be. It is now my favorite bathroom in the house. I highly recommend Juan! I will definitely be working with him in future home projects. Thank you!"

Philip Snyder is the owner and hands-on operator of PS Woodworking. Philip started working professionally with wood in 1987 and is a true "Craftsman" as he is meticulous and methodical in creating what he describes as "functional art". In most cases initial consultations are free. Although Philip is a licensed insured & bonded contractor he does not sub-out work but will offer referrals when requested.

Full Service General Contractors specializing in custom home construction, remodels/additions, light commercial, apartments, and outdoor spaces. We also have an efficiency division that does in-home electrical, water, heating, and health audits looking for the "low hanging fruit" of conservation. The majority of our work is done by our in house labor, and we utilize subcontractors for specialty work such as plumbing, electrical, solar hot water, etc. We provide custom quotes for your individual project and offer very competitive rates, plus can combine efficiency upgrades with more traditional contracting services to provide better pricing for both. Our efficiency division specializes in looking for the most cost effective solutions or upgrades, and typically do not encourage large expenditures such as solar PV systems that can take decades to pay for themselves, but rather the smaller system upgrades and refinements that provide the most bang for the buck. We also provide preconstruction services including plan review, value engineering/cost control, permitting/entitlements, and coordination with architect/engineers. We are fully licensed, bonded, and insured, and have been building in Sonoma County and the surrounding areas for over 30 years. Our staff includes a LEED accredited professional (www.usgbc.org) and has been involved with “Build It Green” projects. Give us the “Angie’s List” wink and receive a 5% discount!!

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is more complex. Unless the fireplace is ventless by design, you’ll need some type of exhaust pipe system to safely send fumes and other harmful byproducts out of the house. Even then, ventless fireplaces are not always permitted because they do keep the byproducts inside of your house. Ventless fireplaces are safest when installed in spaces that are themselves well-ventilated, like large rooms with lots of windows.

The best wood for a fireplace includes hardwoods, such as ash, birch, cherry, maple, and oak. These woods ignite quickly and put out the most heat. They also produce less smoke than other types of wood. Softwoods, such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, are poor choices for burning in a fireplace because they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes it challenging to light.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Yes, capped chimneys should still be vented. Failing to vent a chimney will result in condensation buildup inside the chimney, which commonly results in mold growth. If mold begins to grow in a chimney, it frequently goes undetected and spreads quickly through the home. Mold and moisture can damage the structural integrity of your home, and exposure to mold can cause discomfort and illness in residents.

The cost to replace a chimney damper ranges from $160 to $520, depending on the type of damper and the complexity of the installation. If you're looking to repair an existing damper, expect to pay around $100 and $225, depending on the extent of the damage and your location. Hiring a professional ensures proper installation or repair, which can help maintain energy efficiency and prevent drafts, making it a worthwhile investment for long-term savings.
