"I worked with Alpha once before, and they assisted with a second project 2 years ago which, now finally completed, I'm able to write a review about. Alpha helped with structural plans for windows in a garden level unit in order to prepare the proposal for city approval. Alpha is a big company and it took them a little while to complete everything; however I can certainly say that the engineer and contact people were knowledgeable and thorough. The plans were approved with their help and now that the unit is permitted for occupancy, the windows are a lovely attribute to the space."

"The project went great. Peter is very professional, super knowledgeable, responsive and timely. The plans were done on time and there were no problems with the city review. They answered the questions the contractor had during the construction. Couldn't be happier with the whole process. I thought it would be more difficult than it was. Thanks to Peter and his team we feel very safe with the new addition. We are planning on putting a second story on our house (when we can afford it) and we will absolutely use Peter.

"Vista Structural engineered the structural support for our infinity pool on a sloped backyard, using cassions, a tricky job that requires both precision and creativity. They nailed it. The pool turned out absolutely stunning, and we had full confidence in the engineering behind it. Highly recommend!"

"Eran quickly responded to my inquiry regarding a load bearing structure of my home. He sent his structural engineer to determine if the structure was a load bearing problem. The engineer was able to determine 100% that it was not a load bearing structure. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs structural engineering solutions."

"The architects assisted in getting permits and answered all questions during the course of the construction. Fortunately and thanks to the accurate plans we did not have any corrections related to the plans. I am very happy with Franco Ricalde company and will work with them again. By the way, we received a lot of compliments on the final project which was an ADU in the backyard."

"I couldn't find a structural engineer to look at my drawings and provide good engineering services until I called Peter. He was willing to look at the project even though there were still questions about the build to be answered."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build over a stump if the roots are no longer alive. Living roots will continue to grow and may damage your new construction over time. Similarly, you should also remove rotting stumps because they may continue to attract pests and even cause new structures (especially those made from wood) to decompose as well.

Dormers must be able to bear the load of their own construction and the added window. The style of the dormer, however, will determine where the weight loads onto your home's structure. A gable dormer bears the weight on the side walls whereas a shed dormer bears it on the front walls.

Structural engineers are necessary for projects involving alterations to load-bearing structures, foundation work, and compliance with safety standards. This includes home expansions, retaining walls, and significant repairs that impact a property's integrity.

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.
