"Ernie responded immediately, when I called Home Advisor. He was very helpful and had one of his employees scheduled to come out to our home to give an estimate and provide a contract. Toya arrived on time for the estimate, and the crew came out on time the day the trimming and removal of our trees were to be done. The crew was very professional and cleaned up after the job was finished. I would highly recommend Ernie's Tree Service."

Small jobs welcome

"Luis is a very cordial and competent supervisor/manager and his tree trimmer was super clearly an expert at his craft. We had a limited budget and told Luis what we needed and they did it all for the budget we had available. There is no doubt that we would reccomend them."

"Mario, with EcOrganic Landscape Services (ELOS), was brought in to resolve a difficult situation with our community irrigation system. It was a significant break in the main line underneath a concrete driveway. Previously, this main line was repaired by another company in the same spot. Once Mario analyzed the situation, he determined the root cause of the breaks and provided us with a permanent solution. He replaced the entire pipe under the concrete with a single piece, eliminating all joints under the concrete. He did it in a non-invasive way so that the driveway looks like nothing happened. Furthermore, Mario is very professional and responsible, and he stayed on top of the entire project process, communicating effectively with me and with the homeowner affected by the break. As expected, I have already rehired EOLS to help us with another landscape issue. We highly recommend Mario from EOLS for your irrigation and landscape services. He will do an excellent job for you."

"Fernando arrived exactly when he said he would. He and his helper worked hard and did a great job. They cleaned up the area before leaving each evening. Fernando definitely knows his job and is very knowledgeable about trees and plants. His price was not low but we were glad we chose him for our project. He completed the job when he said he would even though we added some extra work. We were very happy with Fernando and Rainbow Landscaping."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to prune back the trunk by 1 to 2 feet each year to promote bushy growth. Doing so concentrates vegetative buds closer to the bottom of the tree, where you can easily harvest fruit. For side shoots that are a year old, leave at least six leaves.

Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit.

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.

The best way is to start controlling tree height long before it grows too large, via careful pruning through the years. But that’s not always possible. If a tree has become too high or too large, use selective pruning to remove the most troublesome branches, one by one, without topping the tree. Gently shaping a tree like this can, over time, correct problems. You can also find growth inhibitors to spray on a tree to stop it from growing too rapidly, but use these sparingly if at all.

Pruning a tree is a yearly DIY job that involves removing small dead branches, leaves, and blooms to help the tree grow bigger and stronger. You can often complete the job with basic home gardening tools. Trimming a tree, however, removes larger sections to control the direction the tree grows in and protects your home, utility wires, and yard from potentially dangerous branches.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.
