"Ken and Hugo are fantastic! We have had them remodel our kitchen and two bathrooms, one being the master. Both bathrooms were complete demolition and remodel, and one needed to reroute the existing plumbing. All three remodels turned out amazing! Their tile and granite work are superb. They guided us along on all three projects, offering suggestions and pointing us to the right vendors to get our materials, all of whom made this overwhelmed couple feel very comfortable, and helped with the designs. We are so happy with the results and feel very fortunate to have found them."

"First, let me say.... our project was not easy. We had high expectations of what we were trying to accomplish. We went through two other high-end San Diego landscape designers, both of whom were awful, to say the least. Jay Gardner of California Smartscape came to our rescue, telling us, "We will create the yard of your dreams."  Jay indeed created the beautiful yard we were dreaming of - perfect for our family and perfect for entertaining!

Throughout the process, we were able to see the vision created by Jay and his wonderful designer Jesse in 3D, which allowed us to easily implement and immediately see any changes in the design to create the perfect backyard we had imagined.  Our onsite contractors Sal and Bob managed the job to perfection. Their skillful staff were on the job site every day, worked diligently, and were always respectful of our property.  The project was finished in a timely manner, as promised. After going through **** with two previous designers, we found heaven with California Smartscape.

We now sit and enjoy our backyard with our friends and family every day. We thank Jay, Jesse, and their entire staff for helping us achieve the ultimate entertaining backyard, where all of our neighbors want to visit!"

Fountains questions, answered by experts

The average pond maintenance cost is $2,000. But how much you pay to take care of your pond depends on multiple factors, such as the size of the pond and whether fish live in it. Your area's climate also affects the overall maintenance cost, as you may need to winterize your pond to protect it and any aquatic life in it during the colder months.

You have several options for your pond by getting your yard ready for the winter. You can winterize your koi pond by ensuring it’s at least 5 feet deep so it doesn’t freeze completely, installing a pond heater or aerator and having it run at all times, and installing a deicer if temperatures are dangerously low for an extended period. You can also choose to shut down your pond for the winter by removing all the wildlife in it and bringing it indoors, cleaning out the filter and pump, and then covering the pond with a tarp.

Placing your water feature in direct sun can speed up evaporation, leading to pump damage and algae growth. Shade or partial shade serves as the ideal location for most water features—just watch out for tree and plant debris that may fall in and clog the pump.

Seeps and springs form when groundwater reaches the earth’s surface. The main differences between them are the amount of water and the flow rate. Seeps are smaller than springs and consist of water that’s stagnant or flows slowly. Springs contain more water and flow more quickly.

After you fill in your pool, you can add trees and plants that help stabilize the soil. You might decide not to fill it in at all and find another use for the sunken area instead. A few ideas include creating a seating area or garden inside the empty pool. Depending on its size, you could create a place to roller-skate or install basketball hoops for an unconventional court.
