We are a Non-Profit here in SLO county aimed at helping homeowners, and some renters, that may be in a difficult space and need help around their homes. Some are unable to do it themselves or afford to have someone come out and do it for them. Our focus is on a demographic of elderly on a fixed income, people going through a sudden and unexpected disability or life changing event, etc. Sometimes a little help is needed to make a home safer, more accessible, habitable, or even more comfortable and homier with some added curb appeal.

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

If you want to spray paint your cabinets without sanding, you have a few options to rough up the kitchen cabinet surface before priming. First, you can try using mineral spirits and a rough sponge on the cabinet surface to give it some grit for the primer. The second option is to use liquid sandpaper on the cabinet surface so it deglosses the finish and will be ready for primer.

It can take as little as 30 to 60 minutes for wood filler to dry, but some products take up to four hours. Always read labels to ensure you're following the manufacturer’s instructions. Water-based wood fillers typically take longer to dry than oil-based or epoxy-wood fillers, especially when applied to large areas or deep cracks. Wood putty won’t dry completely, remaining slightly pliable.

If you spill wood refinishing oil, wipe up the liquid quickly without spreading the stain and then use soap and water or a stain remover to get rid of the spot. Since the product is oil based, using a detergent like dish soap or a thinner like mineral spirits will help take out the stain. You may need to repeat this process multiple times to remove the stain.

Yes, kitchen cabinets need two coats of paint to achieve a smooth, durable, and uniform finish. The first coat provides a base and may reveal imperfections, while the second coat ensures complete coverage and enhances the color's richness. Applying two coats helps improve the paint's durability, making it more resistant to chipping and wear. Sometimes, a third coat may be necessary for darker colors or cabinets made of a particularly porous material.

No. Once you apply refinishing oil, it will continue to seep into the wood, making it difficult or impossible to refinish over top of it. Since the product contains an oil that’s meant to penetrate existing finishes, almost anything you put on top of it will bring the previous layer of stain with it. If you plan to refinish your cabinets more than once, it’s a good idea to go with the traditional method of sanding before applying a new finish to the surface.
