"John contacted me and gave me a reasonable estimate to install floor tile then porcelain and glass tile for a tub surround. He was upfront that he was very busy and would try to work me in to his schedule. I appreciated John's honesty about being busy and was ok with waiting. John was able to get the floor done a week later and was able to finish the tub surround within a month. All of the tile work was beautiful! Communication was not the best so I had to pester John a bit but he was always very pleasant. I do however understand this happens when someone is a sole owner/operator with no office staff. As a second homeowner, I was around for the floor install but not the tub surround. The job site was not cleaned up as much as I would have liked but not so bad to drop a star. I also realize with winter snow and ice that it's much harder to keep things clean when you have to come in and out of the house a lot to cut tiles and mix mortar and grout."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Glazed ceramic tiles don’t need to be sealed because the glazing already offers some protection against moisture. Unglazed ceramic tiles need to be sealed to keep the porous tile safe from moisture and staining. However, both types of tile can benefit from sealing. Sealant can make the tiles easier to keep clean and offer more resistance to water, spills, and stains.

No, you don’t need to remove the old grout before installing new tile over existing tile. In fact, the old grout helps fill in gaps between tiles, creating a more even surface for the new layer. However, it's important to ensure that the grout is clean, solid, and free of cracks or crumbling areas. Damaged grout should be repaired or replaced before proceeding. Cleaning the surface thoroughly and filling any low spots will help the new adhesive bond properly and ensure a smooth, stable installation.

Tiles last for around 100 years or more. Tiles on backsplashes can last even longer since they’re less likely to crack under foot traffic or from accidental drops, but even tile in high-traffic flooring can last a century or more with proper installation and upkeep. Porcelain tiles are denser and stronger than standard ceramic tiles, so they’ll last longer, often pushing past the 100-year mark.

Yes, it’s possible to cut tile without a wet saw; instead, you can use an angle grinder, a glass cutter, a snap cutter, tile nippers, or a rotary tool with a tile-cutting blade. A manual tile cutter or snap cutter works well for the larger tiles that wet saws are typically used for, while smaller projects might just require nippers or a glass cutting wheel. If you’re working with large quantities of tile, however, power tools are best.

Uniform spacing between tiles is important for a professional and clean appearance. To achieve this spacing, tile spacers should be placed between the tiles and left in place until the mortar hardens and the tiles are secure. You can use X-shaped spacers vertically in between the tiles and laid flat at the corners.
