"As a new home owner I had no idea what to expect. El Dorado Construction was patient, and took the time to explain to me the process of installing a new water main. I was aware of what was going on through out the duration of the project. He beat the deadline and did an outstanding job. He stayed with in budget. I would recommend El Dorado construction to anyone out looking for quality work."

"DH Construction did a complete remodel of our very small kitchen. It entailed demolishing cabinets and a partial demolishment of a load bearing wall. We added a kitchen island, redid our floors, added barn doors, added quartz counters, additional counters and cabinets. Dave worked with our budget and gave us great ideas which we did not even know were possible. He and his crew were very professional, considerate of our time, and always arrived on time. Dave gave us great advice, and made our ideas become a reality. I finally have my dream kitchen! We would definitely recommend him! We will be hiring him next year to add an outside kitchen to our back yard."

Small jobs welcome

"The biggest positive about Kurt was his response and professionalism during the whole process. His price was very competitive and he guided us through the whole building process and answered all of our questions. In addition, the project turned out great! Kurt and his crew rebuilt and replaced our two decks with Trex wood which should give us decades of use. We will definitely use Kurt for future projects and highly recommend him to others."

"I highly recommend Keigh for any home maintenance or improvement projects. He helped us with a wide range of tasks—from landscaping and power washing the house to assembling furniture and handling various odd jobs around the home. He was always punctual, professional, and incredibly trustworthy. What impressed me most was how efficiently he worked; I only had to explain each task once, and he got it done right the first time. His attention to detail and reliability made the whole process smooth and stress-free."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Yes, you can hang picture frames, shelves, and other items on Trusscore panels. For lightweight items (less than 30 pounds), the company recommends using adhesive strips rather than nails or screws. However, you’ll need to secure heavier objects to a stud in the wall. In these situations, Trusscore recommends cutting away the panel material and fastening the object to the stud with metal hardware.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
