"Andrew Brown from Alarm Protection Group facilitated the installation of our home security system. He was a very helpful and informative, and was not pushy, as with other ADT sales reps. He followed up with us after the system was installed to see if we had any questions or concerns re the system. I highly recommend Andrew to anyone who is interested in a home security system."

"On the heels of a vehicle and garage break in we decided it was time for an alarm and a camera system. I did a fair amount of reading of reviews here and a few other sites. I noticed a trend that "Premier Security Solutions" www.alarmguys.net 916-674-2503 kept coming up as highly recommended. So I went to Alarm.com filled out a request for contact and that day Deana of Premier Security gave me a call. We scheduled a time and date and had John Briggs (who I later learned was the owner) come out and talk to us out our wants. John was prompt, courteous and extremely knowledgeable of security. He asked me why an alarm and cameras? What did I think I needed? Have I had an alarm before and with who? What did I like and dislike of them? Then we talked about each of those and then I said I think to secure my house I needed these X items. We looked around and walked and he said yep, no need for a cookie cutter package and sold me only what I needed not. Come to find out Premier Security doesn't sell packages and each system is unique just as each of our houses are. I upgraded the control panel and added the fire dept link as well. I have all the remote features on my cellphone, arm disarm, view status etc. My monthly monitoring charge is comparable to that of another corporate security company. I will be contacting my homeowners policy holder to inform them of the smoke alarm linkage for a rate reduction once I get my alarm certificate. Now to the cameras! WOW! I am thoroughly impressed by the resolution, playback, day and night vision and record audio/video features. I can see the blades of grass blowing in the wind. Please understand my vague limiting of information as I don't want to give to much of my home security away. I can also view live remote streaming to my phone in both Audio and Video. All in all not only have I added to the safety of my home and those of my neighbors , increased my property value, the monies I did spend were paid to a business whose address is in Rocklin, CA. So if you are thinking of an alarm or cameras give them a call and see what they can do for you. I will not receive anything in return for this post, but please feel free to tell John or Deana that you read yet another positive review about them."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

Grounding is a great first step to prevent electrical shock, but you can take it further with GFCI outlets and AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters). In particular, AFCIs help protect against the type of electrical arcs that cause fires, like if a mouse chews on a wire or your laptop starts overheating at the wall. These are required in some areas of your home.

The best window alarm sensor depends on the type of window you’re concerned about since different types of sensors will work best in different scenarios. Many homes are equipped with contact sensors, which trigger an alarm when a window is opened, and each part of the sensor breaks contact with the other. But there are other options, too, like a glass break sensor or motion sensor, which both work well for windows that are in low-traffic areas.

Home automation systems offer a wide range of automation products and services. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Cameras: $35–$350

  • Door and window sensors: $20–$100

  • Doorbells: $100–$350

  • Locks: $150–$400

  • Garage door openers: $150–$500

  • Lighting: $20–$100

  • Speakers: $30–$300

  • Outlets and plugs: $20–$100

  • Thermostats: $150–$300

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: $50–$150

  • Smart home hubs: $200–$900

  • Blinds: $50–$75

  • Appliances: $50–$3,000

  • Vacuums: $200–$1,200

  • Lawn systems: $80–$300

  • Wi-Fi and Mesh systems: $200–$500

  • Water monitoring: $100–$1,000

Professionals optimize camera placement, integrate recording systems, and ensure tamper-proof security.

Security cameras do not need wiring if they are wireless, meaning they are battery-operated and can connect through Wi-Fi. You’ll need to change the batteries on a wireless camera and ensure you have a steady connection to Wi-Fi for video storage. If you have a wired security camera, you’ll need to plug it into an outlet or other power source and a DVR device.
