"The stepped brick walkway in the front of my house was in disrepair and in need of replacement. I sent Tom photos of the area with measurements and he gave two quotes remotely, one to put stepped concrete in its place and one to extend the driveway without steps. Ultimately, I opted to extend the driveway for the extra space. On the day of the installation Tom and his crew arrived on time, quickly removed the brick walkway and set the new concrete with new concrete box and lid for the sewer valve. He also advised that I replace a portion of the bottom of the driveway adjacent to the project area because it had lifted over time and would be a tripping hazard. Overall the project went smoothly and was priced more reasonably than two other estimates I got."

At a depth of two inches, a ton of asphalt covers around 80 to 100 square feet. However, the thicker the asphalt, the less surface area it will cover. That’s why measuring correctly is essential when estimating asphalt needs and costs to ensure you get enough material to cover your entire driveway, patio, or other asphalt surface.

If you’re looking for a similar, eco-friendly driveway material, you might consider one of these options:

  • Permeable pavement: This material is sometimes called “pervious” or “porous” pavement; it allows stormwater to drain into the subbase, eliminating storm drain costs. 

  • Gravel: Consider paving your driveway with locally sourced gravel. By sourcing from a nearby source, your money won’t fund international shipping and will be invested back into your local community.

  • Natural stone pavers: Because natural stone pavers are made from organically-produced stone, there’s no new manufacturing required, limiting the environmental impact. In addition, water easily flows and drains through the gaps in the pavers.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Give your driveway at least 24 to 48 hours to dry. After 72 hours, you can walk or park on it, but tread lightly. It might look solid, but it’s still soft and can be easily damaged. It can take 30 days to a year for an asphalt driveway to fully cure, so avoid parking extremely heavy vehicles on it. For the best results, always check with your contractor for their advice. Different mixes and weather conditions can affect curing times, so it’s worth waiting longer if it means a driveway that lasts.
