"\I already had some general drawings of what I wanted done. Mike took the drawings and tweaked them; adding and taking away some elements as needed. We met several times to discuss the different elements in the drawings until we both felt we had a good design. The drawings were for a mantle, cabinetry, and molding/trim. We had to wait for a mason to install the brick hearth around the fireplace. Then Mike built the mantle in his shop, at one time bringing the piece to the house to check for proper fit. The mantle design included the look of  "dental" molding which is mimicked in the molding/trim; he also constructed a "dental"  molding to go around the room sort of like crown molding, but technically not crown molding. He also built the cabinets which included book shelves, enclosed cabinetry for a sound system, and cubbies for firewood. The work was all custom; no stock cabinets.  Once all the pieces were constructed, Mike painted them in his shop with a special durable spray paint (I don't remember the name of it) so we would not have to deal with him painting in the house. Then he brought the pieces to the house to install. The installation took about 3 days which included installing electrical boxes in the cabinets for the sound system. He took care to calk any gaps and to do any touch up painting as needed.
Mike was very professional and yet personable during the entire process. He was very thoughtful about calling to confirm appointments, showing up at the right time, and using his time well. He was good about meeting with the mason to ensure both were on the same page with regard to the project.  He kept me informed on the progress during the construction. He took care to not make a mess and would clean up at the end of the day. He worked steadily and efficiently. I felt the price was very fair. He showed genuine enthusiasm for the project the whole way through. The final product looks very professional and custom, which is what I wanted.

"It went great! What was once just dirt and weeds is now beautiful land and hardscape! Roney was very responsive to our requests and ideas and quickly came back with a design we were exited to get implemented. Within a few days a full crew was on-site to start the work. As the work started there were a few areas where his foreman Juan recommended modifications. These modifications were very positive and above and beyond the original agreement and at no additional cost to us, which made my husband very happy! Those included replacement of 3 steps to our deck from wood to concrete, increased length of the sidewalk, improved fencing beyond the original design, some additional irrigation work and fixing the base of another set of stairs to regulation height by adding flagstone. Juan had great vision for how to make these changes so the outcome went from beautiful to outstanding! And the crown jewel of this whole project is a custom, unique fire pit that I found only as a picture from the internet. Juan pulled this off with no formal instructions, just a solitary picture and his own creativity! We could not be happier and certainly recommend Babylon Garden Landscaping."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Composite decking boards aren't your only options for building a deck. There are several other types of materials for decks, including wood and aluminum decking. Wood decking comes in many different wood species, offering natural beauty and classy timelessness to your yard. Aluminum is a lightweight, water-resistant, and low-maintenance material that is also non-slip.

Choices include wood, composite, and hardwoods, each with unique benefits.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

The best and fastest way to remove paint from a deck often involves combining a chemical stripper with a pressure washer. Gel-based paint strippers are highly recommended because their thick consistency makes them less messy and easier to apply than liquid strippers. After applying the stripper to loosen the paint, you can use a pressure washer to efficiently wash away the residue. When using a pressure washer for this task, it's important to use a low pressure (under 1000 PSI) to avoid forcing too much moisture into the wood, which could lead to mildew or rot.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.
