"I live in a severe wind area, it is common for fences & gates to blow down in my neighborhood. When I hired Robert I needed both gates replaced. I explained the weather situation, & he over engineered both on paper. He showed up the next day with all necessary materials, & was done in a couple hours for a very reasonable price compared to the major fencing companies in town. I believe his work will be the last thing standing in my neighborhood."

"I dealt mostly with foreman Ryan Fisher to build a new redwood fence and gate in my backyard. The crew worked hard and fast. When Randy Aldred stopped by to look things over, he had a suggestion on the gate and had them re-work it, without any prodding from me or my wife. These guys built a good fence, were professional, and we are very pleased."

"I am very satisfied with Eugene’s work on a kitchen and bedroom renovation project in Tahoe City. Throughout the project he was a great communicator. He was responsive and he met his timeline and commitments. The quality of the work did not disappoint. It’s incredibly rare to find a contractor that finishes work on time, and on target, but Eugene is that person. I recommend Eugene without reservation."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.
