"I hired TMC Heating & Cooling for duct repair. Tim Coronado was very knowledgeable and professional. The repair was quick and clean. He didn't try to "upsell" me. Because of this, I will be using him to maintain my HVAC units."

"I called Ajax to service my 20+ year old unit. Ken answered my call, and came out immediately! I was afraid he was going to tell me to replace my unit… I didn’t have the money to do that.. I didn’t even have to tell him that. He explained in detail what was going on with my unit, replaced the recommended parts… and got my unit running so much better than it has ever worked since I’ve lived here! He even took pictures so I could see what he was talking about, and said with the annual plan, he could monitor the unit and keep it running as long as possible for me! Honestly!? Who does that? Thank you Ken for your quick response, your thorough, no hassle, honest interaction! He was even great with my animals!! If anyone needs an expert HVAC company… AJAX would be it! Thanks again Ken."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The difference between a home surge protector and an HVAC surge protector is that an HVAC surge protector is designed to protect the components inside your HVAC unit while a home surge protector is installed near appliances and meant to protect your entire home. There are three tiers of whole-house surge protectors, and they are more expensive to install than HVAC surge protectors.

It is possible to add air conditioning to an older home, but it can be very expensive to do so. Expect to pay anywhere from $6,000 to $17,000 or more for the ductwork and AC unit. You’ll also have to hack into the home’s walls and ceilings to add ductwork, which can impact the aesthetics of an old home.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.

Water buildup in your HVAC system is a cause for alarm. If water accumulates in your ductwork, it can drastically lower your home's air quality and create safety hazards. These risks include mold growth, damage to your HVAC system, and attracting pests that are seeking water into your ducts. Proper insulation and sealing of ducts can prevent this, and regular inspection and maintenance can address water damage problems before they become too severe.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.
