"It was a pleasure to work with David, he was punctual and when he said he would be there, he was there. Painted the exterior of my house and it took 3 work days, one day to pressure wash, one day for patching cracks and one day to paint. Im extremely happy with the job he did and would highly reccommend him to everyone."

"We had an absolutely fantastic experience working with Tom from Davila’s Paint and Plaster! From start to finish, he was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly detail-oriented. He took the time to explain everything he was going to do and provided a clear breakdown of the costs before starting any work, which we truly appreciated. His craftsmanship is outstanding! He repaired a large hole in our drywall seamlessly—it looks as if it was never there. On top of that, he tackled a challenging paint job in one of our bedrooms, and the results were beyond our expectations. The coverage was flawless, and the room looks brand new! Not only is Tom highly skilled, but he is also friendly, reliable, and truly cares about the quality of his work. It’s rare to find someone so dedicated and passionate about what they do. We couldn’t be happier with the results and will absolutely be calling him for any future projects."

"Eric and the rest of the workers and employees at 247 painting were so amazing. They took such great care in painting my new house for move in!! I wanted some really out there colors for my backsplash and my accent walls in my bedrooms and it came out so great and so clean the edges were so crisp I am so happy. The customer service was top tier. They were so attentive and professional. Everyone equally had enough knowledge to answer my many questions so the process went very smoothly. My house was finished two whole days earlier than expected so that was also a bonus. I will definitely be hiring 247 painting again!!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.
