"They were very careful with details, and they cleaned everything up after their work. In negotiating with Cesar ahead of time, he was cordial and helpful, allowing us space to decide exactly what we wanted in color and trim. On site, they took great care in the preparation prior to painting and did an excellent job in all respects. We enjoyed the experience, and are really happy with the finished product. "Daniel did a wonderful job with all that I asked of him. The work I had him complete included: interior painting, door frame repair, deck maintenance, and an entertainment center installation. I have already rescheduled Daniel to return for additional work and I feel I have found a reliable handyman for future projects."

"It went very well.  He never varied from his estimate of labor costs and there was only a few extra supplies that needed purchasing after his original materials estimate but that was usually for extra work we asked him to do as the project progressed.  There were a few times when we observed things that we preferred another way (such as the color of paint used on the vents) and when they were brought up with him he adjusted very quickly.  Much of the work was done while we were on vacation and we trusted Ceaser with the keys to our house.  We're very happy with the final result.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.
