"Our kitchen remodel with McCormick Home Builders went beyond our expectations. Leoni and her team took the time to understand exactly what we wanted. The open layout design changed the way we use the space, and it’s been perfect for family gatherings. They were prompt, courteous, and genuinely invested in making sure we were happy. "I added a Master bedroom, bathroom, and extended my living room. I also rebuilt my deck. Alberto (Owner of Apex construction) is decent, honest, professional, easy to work with, and keeps his word. Alberto is hard working and determined. His crew took care of matters quickly, they were knowledgeable, clean and fast. Alberto gives good suggestions and most importantly listens to his clients. Apex construction is a great company and do an excellent job and I would recommend Alerto and Apex construction without hesitation."

"We hired GVR Construction for a major home remodeling project that included adding square footage to our home, and we truly couldn?t be happier with the experience. The construction was completed on time with no delays ? in fact, it moved faster than we expected. Everything was organized, efficient, and handled with great attention to detail from start to finish. What really sets Gilbert is his character. He is honest, respectful, and extremely professional. He?s easy to work with, communicates clearly, and has a calm, steady temperament that makes the entire process feel smooth and stress-free. You can tell he genuinely cares about doing things the right way. It?s been three years since construction was completed, and he still responds quickly whenever we have a question or need something addressed. His response time is excellent, and he sends his crew out right away to take care of any issues. That kind of long-term accountability is rare and speaks volumes about his commitment."

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Modular homes last an average of between 50 and 75 years, and high-quality modular homes can last for 100 years with proper maintenance. For comparison, a standard home lasts 50 to 100 years and can push to 150 or longer with good maintenance. Modular homes provide better long-term value in that they are significantly more affordable and can last almost as long, but some buyers are wary of modular home longevity, so the actual value if you sell could be lower.

Craftsman-style homes are predominantly found in the Western United States, specifically in Southern California, where the style originated. Since the climate was mild and there was access to plenty of natural resources, Southern California became a hub for this style at its inception. That being said, if you consult with an architect near you, you can have a Craftsman-style home anywhere.

In most cases, you should get an architect before you hire a builder. An architect will be the one to draw up formal plans for your project, including guidelines and even material lists for your builder to follow during construction. Many architects can even help you find builders, choose one for your project, and negotiate prices. Some are also willing to act as project managers throughout the process, working closely with a builder from start to finish.

On average, the cost of a home builder is about $150 per square foot, but that price can range from around $100 to $400 per square foot or more. That puts the typical price range of a standard, 2,000-square-foot house between $200,000 and $800,000. Some factors that affect the price of hiring a home builder include the following:

  • Location of your home and the living cost in the area

  • Type of foundation and framing you choose

  • Quality of the building materials

  • Footprint and layout of the house

  • Number of stories

  • Builder’s experience

Local regulations dictate how big an ADU can be, and there may also be restrictions on the percentage of the main residence’s square footage an ADU can have. In most cases, an ADU must be smaller than the main residence, but check with your local building authority to confirm restrictions on ADU size.
