Ken was incredibly patient, explaining every step of the process. He immediately understood the floor plan and installed everything to code. His attention to detail and knowledge was exceptional. The quality of his work is evident in every connection and fixture. The service panel upgrade was seamless, my kitchen looks amazing and now my home feels more secure and efficient. "Roberto Sanchez Solar System, I interviewed 4 solar panel companies and I chose NRG because Will was able to explain everything well. He answered all my questions to my complete satisfaction. Friendly and honest, Will made the sales process very smooth and personable. Tiffany helped and coordinated the project to make sure everything goes well. She always got back to my emails and phone calls promptly. Installers completed the solar panels when I was at work. Came home and he solar panels were on the roof. Definitely a nice install and quality work was delivered. Lisa helped out with the financing on the HVAC. She was patient and I believe got me a lower amount that before. Solar edge app is great to use and straight forward. Highly recommended company thanks NRG. I am excited to use my new solar system!"

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

The average homeowner needs around 22 solar panels, but the exact number depends on your monthly energy consumption. Your solar professional should size your array to offset your consumption, meaning you’ll need fewer panels if you use below-average amounts of electricity, or more than 22 if you use above-average amounts of electricity. The number of panels also depends on the output of each panel. The average is around 400 watts, but you might need more panels if you install less capable equipment. Since there are so many variables, you should have a professional size your system.

Solar panels can pay for themselves in five to 15 years, depending on the cost of your system, how much energy it generates, whether you qualify for incentives or power buybacks, and the price of energy in your area. Solar panels pay for themselves over time as they lower electricity bills, so it will take time to recoup your initial investment. However, the longer you have your system, the more money you can save and earn.

In almost every case, solar panels need to be removed to replace roof shingles. In some cases, such as solar installations where the panels are on raised platforms above the roof surface, installers may be able to install new shingles without removing the solar installation. However, to get a quality roofing installation, panels need to come off. Most roofing contractors won’t remove or reinstall solar panels as part of a roofing project, so you’ll need to contact your solar provider.

Installing solar panels involves drilling small holes in your roof to secure the solar panel mounting brackets. These brackets hold the solar panels in place and must withstand strong weather conditions so they’re secured into your roof. However, holes and screws are sealed to prevent leaking and further damage.

The best way to know if your roof can support solar panels is to hire a structural engineer. They’ll look at your roof and approve the design of your solar panel system or suggest changes. The best roofing for solar panels is made from strong materials like asphalt shingles and metal, but tile and gravel will work. Softer materials like thatch or temporary structures are not a good fit.
