"From the moment Tom responded to my Angie's List inquiry until the job was complete I was nothing but smiles. Felt like family. What a nice thing in these trying days. Three months ago I hired a handyman to fix the flapper in the toilet and he tank cracked. A mess was left and he never returned my calls. Lesson learned - hire professionals. Tom called and left message. When I got back to him he knew right away why I was calling. Arranged an appointment for the next day and told me exactly what would be done. Joey showed up (half hour early - still in jammies. Got right to business. A few things came up but they were not problem for him. An hour or so later he was emailing the receipt. Would highly recommend and plan on using them again for both major plumbing and general maintenance."

"John repaired two under kitchen sink leaks and replaced a toilet flange and seal. Quality of the work was excellent. I thought the price was high but I rarely call a plumber and could not have done the work myself! Would call again if I need them. John said he has been doing plumbing work for 15 years. Very personable."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, you’ll need to replace your toilet’s wax seal any time you move the toilet. This is because movement of the toilet will break the seal, rendering the remaining wax useless. Thankfully, replacing a wax seal is fairly easy, and the seal itself only costs $2 to $10 at most home improvement stores.

When replacing a wax seal you typically also have to replace the closet bolts that secure the toilet to the flange. These are usually about 2.5" - 3" long and have to be cut once the toilet is secure. Cutting them usually makes them too short to reuse.

Technically, you can put an elongated toilet seat on a round toilet, but it’s not a good idea. Elongated toilet seats are a few inches longer than round toilets, so they will hang over the front edge of your toilet, which isn’t appealing. Additionally, an unsupported toilet seat or portion of a toilet seat is more likely to crack and shift, which could result in injury to whoever uses the toilet. Always match your toilet seat style to your toilet, or replace the toilet entirely if you’re looking to switch styles.

Yes, you should screw your flange to the subfloor, including cement. The best way to get this done is to predrill holes into the concrete using a hammer drill and a ¼-inch concrete bit. Be careful when you’re ready to bolt your flange down, as you can accidentally crack it. You can avoid this issue by not installing the screws too deep. Or, you can opt for a flange with a stainless steel ring so you don’t have to worry about cracking the plastic.

Yes, a toilet, sink, and shower can share the same vent. This is a common installation method that can simplify plumbing and save space. However, there are important considerations. The vent and associated plumbing must be large enough to handle the demands of all fixtures without compromising the vent's effectiveness. Additionally, the toilet should always be located downstream of all other fixtures. Because requirements can vary and space might be limited, it is essential to check your local building and plumbing codes and consult with a qualified plumber to ensure the installation is done correctly.

Yes, continuing to flush a clogged toilet is not likely to break up the clog. Instead, it will continue to put pressure on the clog while filling the bowl with more water, which can potentially cause the toilet to overflow—leading to an even bigger mess. Rather than repeatedly flushing, use a toilet plunger or plumber’s snake to dislodge the clog.
