"I recently had the pleasure of working with Brian from Hamilton Electric for a hot tub installation, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the experience. From start to finish, Brian demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, expertise, and attention to detail. The entire installation was handled seamlessly, with meticulous planning and execution to ensure everything was up to code and functioning perfectly. Brian was incredibly knowledgeable, answering all my questions with clarity and confidence. His workmanship was outstanding, and he took the time to ensure a clean and safe setup. Beyond the exceptional quality of work, the pricing was very reasonable, offering great value for the level of service provided. Customers say: True professional

"Armando is very professional, and I almost did not hire him because of a previous review he had on his feedback. Therefore, I received another quote from a higher rated area contractor who also stated prices were better. The other company failed to show up as scheduled, but arrived the following day and his prices were higher than Armandos quote. He did a fantastic job, price was fair, and was promt. He is trust worthy too, I had to run to my daughters college, 3.5 hours later, I arrived back at home..everything was perfectly installed, other items working in tip-top shape. He is respectful, and he is picks up after himself (and some of my extra dog hair too). Armando is my new, go to handyman. I am sure you will find him great.. He serves the Pleasanton area toom"

"We hired proper power electric to update lighting and switches in our home. Forest and foster showed up on time. They were professional and in sync with each other. We added recessed lighting, fan ,and outdoor lights to our new home. Forest made suggestion to add another switch down the hallway to make it easier to turn off lights when going to the room. Both were knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. They even helped my neighbor with their solar panel system. We had a great experience and will definitely hire again."

"Did a great job, even corrected some code violations that were present when we moved in. Installed multiple 110v, 230v single phase, 230v 3 phase and 480v 3phase circuits, wired a paint booth, Tumbler unit, overhead crane systems, and even did some repairs on a complicated piece of machinery that wasn’t working. Great guys work hard no excuses. They get the job done plain and simple. I had used them twice because they were that reliable."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Most homeowners won't be able to claim a home generator as a tax write-off. However, a whole-house generator may be tax-deductible in certain situations depending on its purpose. For instance, if it's needed to power essential medical equipment, it may qualify as a medical expense deduction. Also, in some cases, businesses can deduct a generator as a business expense if it supports operations. Always consult a tax professional to determine eligibility based on your specific circumstances and the applicable IRS regulations.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.
