"I am an Electrical Engineer by education and trade, working for several high-tech firms in Silicon Valley over a 45-year career, so I've never felt the need to call an electrician. But I know my limits and repairing an electrical open circuit routed in underground conduit is one of them. After trouble shooting the issue, I knew there was a break in the line so I called Mike at M3 electrical. He put me on his schedule, showed up on that date (even a little early) and in less than two hours had the issue fixed. Not only that, but he advised the type of 2-wire Romex that had failed was not the proper wire for an underground application. He pulled about 75 feet of the proper wire through the conduit and even installed a junction box at my street light for a clean installation. Costly you think? Not in my opinion! If I ever need electrical work done in the future, Mike is the guy I will call. I suggest you do as well. Mark S. A very happy customer"

"Dr. Wattz Electric came in the same day he contacted me and provided a quote I could not refuse. We arranged for him to come back a few days later to install various switches and outlets in my garage as well as 3 Ring security camera/floodlights around my home. He delivered on the various activities and assignments with distinction. He installed everything perfectly. I will use him again in the future."

"The Huft technicians knew their stuff. They arrived promptly in the morning, removed the existing units, and installed the new units without a hitch. The systems were up and running by the afternoon, and have served me well over the last three years, working great in both summer and winter. Huft provided free semi-annual maintenance visits for two years. There was a minor problem with the rooftop unit recently, and they repaired it under warranty at no charge. The cost was not cheap, but for me it was worth it to go all-electric."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A ground wire is not required for GFCI to work. A ground is a third wire in an outlet in addition to the live and neutral wires. It serves as an escape conduit for electricity in case of a short circuit. If a ground wire is present, installers should connect it to the appropriate terminal. Otherwise, a GFCI will work fine without it.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

Do not touch electrical wires in your home without first turning off the power at your circuit breaker and testing the wire with a voltage meter or multimeter. Electricity still flows through wires even when a light switch is powered off, and touching wires with the switch on can result in electrical shock.

If you’re outlet isn’t working but the breaker isn’t tripped , that could mean a number of things. First, check if it’s a GFCI outlet, which has added protection so your breakers don’t malfunction. If that’s the case, simply hit the outlet's reset button and see if it works. If it doesn’t, or you don’t have a GFCI outlet, you might have a loose outlet or loose wiring, a damaged breaker, or an overloaded circuit, which would require a dedicated breaker. It’s best to consult with an electrician to diagnose the problem accurately.

The most common gauge for indoor outlets around your home is 12- and 14-gauge wires. But if you’re working with larger appliances like ovens, washing machines, or dryers (all of which require more amplitude), you might find 10-, eight-, or six-gauge wires to help support those hefty appliances.
