There isn’t a one-size-fits-all best tile for a dog shower. Consider your budget, tile durability, aesthetics, and, most importantly, practicality. Avoid tiles your dog will slide around on. Pebbles are a great non-slip option, but are pricey and tricky to install. Glass might look modern, but it’s not scratch-resistant. Small, floor-rated ceramic or porcelain tiles are economical and have many grout lines that make the surface more slip-resistant. Pick a matte finish rather than a shiny tile if you want it to hide stray mud and hairs better.
There are several different products that allow underwater repair. Pool putty can help repair chips, cracks, and loose tiles without draining your pool, but it should only be used for a temporary fix. Certain two-part epoxy adhesives will cure underwater, too. That said, while it is technically possible to fix pool tiles underwater, it is usually not ideal, depending on the depth of your pool. You will still have to reach the tile, which means you might have to dive and make the repair while submerged.
For glass tile, you want to use unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a stronger and grittier cement grout that is great for installing tiles with wider gaps and into joints. However, it is susceptible to scratching glass tile and is more difficult to use in thinner gaps. Unsanded grout, while more expensive, is easier to fit between thin gaps and is less harsh on delicate materials, like glass tile.
Poured-in-place terrazzo flooring is more durable than tile. In fact, it’s one of the most durable types of flooring on the market. It can last anywhere from 40 to 100 years, depending on maintenance. On average, you can expect your terrazzo floor to last about 75 years, but you will have to make repairs as needed.
Lack of durability is the most significant downside of painting tile. However, a painted tile backsplash doesn't see the same kind of action as, say, painted flooring tiles. For backsplashes, the durability of the finish is crucial because they often require cleaning. However, you can minimize the durability problem by using mild cleaners and water on the painted surfaces.
