A finishing layer is an important step in the staining process. A top coat helps make a stain last longer by protecting it from spills, scratches, and natural weathering.

A lacquer finish is thin, fast-drying, and best used for cabinets, molding, and trim. It’s not recommended for outdoor furniture. For trim like door frames and window frames, use a brush to apply satin paint to ensure you get into all the nooks and crannies.

If you are caulking, painter’s tape should be removed before the caulk starts to set. It only takes 30 to 60 minutes for the caulk to dry, so this should be done fairly quickly.

While it is possible for painter’s tape to leave some residue, it is designed specifically not to. If it does leave residue behind, it likely means that the painter’s tape was left on too long after the paint dried.
