We are Daniels Landscaping Service, sirving in Monterey peninsula for over ten years. We design and install landscape and hardscape.

"About As bad as you can get.Contacted Daniel first of April about doing the whole project. He accepted it and sent a quote of $46,850.00. Thought it was high but from all his reviews I thought we’d get a terrific job so we went with him. He Finally began work 3RD week in June. He and his crew rarely showed up. Usually on Mondays and Tuesdays only. Always had to call him to ask if they were coming because we had to get up early to save parking spaces for his crew. Daniel was given a complete scaled drawing of the whole courtyard and pathway around the house, with all heights, widths, sizes of every project. and before they did the work my husband went over with Daniel every single time the heights and widths we wanted etc. And still every project they got wrong and had to re-do or repair. Then they made the footings for the front entry steps and the concrete for the patio, which was supposed to be tiled. I showed Daniel the EXACT tile I wanted and even offered to just buy it myself since it was just in San Diego and could have it shipped or picked up. He said, no, he didn’t like dealing with those types of companies! So one day his crew came and dropped off some of the most horrible looking mixture of different types of Terra Cotta, Saltillo tile, cracked, dry, and old and he brought OCTAGON, not HEXAGON. we asked him why he didn’t call us if he couldn’t remember what tile and shape we wanted, he responded “I FORGOT”. They poured the concrete for the steps at the same time as the patio. WHAT A DISASTER IT TURNED OUT TO BE. Heavy, deep boot prints all over the place; cracks, spalling concrete, and worse, they poured the concrete on a Tuesday and didn’t return till the following Monday to take the forms off, but Daniel did stop by on Wednesday to pick up the $24,950.00! When they came back Monday they had to literally Pound off the footings because you’re suppose to remove the forms the same day! They couldn’t get the wood 2x2 stakes in the concrete and the metal stakes out so they broke off the wood stakes and cut off the metal stakes, leaving them stuck in the concrete. They had begun to try and hide the cracks by filling them with concrete patch. Big chunks began to give way when I stepped on the step on day. The whole perimeter of the concrete was lumpy, bumpy and no way you’d be able to properly tile over that. When we spoke to Daniel about the cracks, he got testy and said “those aren’t cracks, they’re just cosmetic”. He suddenly brought in the ugly and wrong tile because he was in a hurry to try and cover it up, but we said we would not accept the tile and he needed to do something about the concrete. He said he could remove it and replace yet when we asked him to do so he said no, he wasn’t going to pour any more concrete, he wasn’t going to finish the job. And in one of the wood storage cabinets they didn’t use a strong enough form and the concrete had a major sag to it under the heavy cement top. Daniel left the forms in the second wood storage cabinet until just two days ago, even though we demanded he remove them he kept saying he didn’t have the right tool in his truck ( it was nothing more than a star point screwdriver! Truth is, he didn’t want to take those forms off for fear that too was sagging. Anyway, it gets worse and more, but I will let the pictures of his work speak for what I am saying. But, we figured since he and the crew were hardly showing up they must have been doing another project instead of ours and turns out we were right. When We called him about the mess he’d made and requested it be removed he came over angry, shoved his phone in my disabled husbands face and said, and I quote “Look at this picture of the work I am doing on this other $700,000.00 project ; Do you think I want to ruin my Reputation over this little $40thousand dollar job ( which was actually closer to $50k). So to date he has refused to do anything other than repair the bottom step and he keeps pushing to let him tile over the bad concrete. We had no option other than to file a complaint with the CA.State License Board, The BBB and will probably have to file against his license Bond and Court. It’s been very stressful. He’s a liar, a cheat and unscrupulous. BEWARE."

Pavers and Hardscaping questions, answered by experts

There should be a 1-inch thick layer of sand underneath your pavers in order to provide a proper base.

If your current driveway is full of potholes, cracks, and inconsistencies, it's best to remove your old driveway and start from scratch. That being said, concrete resurfacing and asphalt resurfacing are cost-effective options if the underlying structure is still strong enough to support your vehicle but just needs an extra layer to prolong its life.

An example of permeable paving is a set of cinder blocks or natural stone pavers with room inside for natural materials, such as gravel, sand, or grass. You can also design these pavers with brick or plastic tiles.

In addition to these pavers, permeable pavement can be obtained by using a highly porous material, such as pervious concrete or pervious asphalt.

If you're designing a new patio in an area with poor drainage, permeable pavers made from porous materials may help prevent water issues. Most permeable pavers feature a gravel-only aggregate base instead of a concrete base to allow water to flow through instead of getting trapped. While beneficial in some cases, permeable pavers come with higher initial costs and greater load-bearing limitations compared to traditional pavers.

Adhere pavers to concrete with either mortar or a concrete-specific adhesive. In most cases, you will also need to lay a permeable sand layer below the pavers to encourage proper stability and drainage in your transformed patio, porch, or driveway. To lay pavers like a pro, always make sure you take the proper preparatory steps before adhering them directly to the concrete.
