After a salesman came to our door, he designed our landscaping plan — retaining wall, stairs, shed pad, boulders, and sprinklers — and quoted $24,995. I paid in full around July 8, 2025, with a contract promising completion by July 28. No one ever showed up until I contacted them. Since then, I’ve dealt with four project managers, endless delays, broken promises, and almost zero communication. One crew came but didn’t know what they were supposed to do and couldn’t reach anyone for direction. Another poured a footing wrong, according to one of their own workers. Months later, my yard is still torn apart, and HavenHub continues to ignore me despite taking full payment. I’ve had to involve a lawyer just to try to get a response. "Del Rey Paving exhibits predatory sales practices, failure to deliver on promises, inadequate design, errors in construction, failure to abide by warranties, seeking funds out of contract in order to maintain “good faith” relationship, unresponsiveness, and poor service. After a very high-pressure sales pitch (disguised as a design meeting) with all the accoutrements (fancy PowerPoint demonstration, a copy of their impressive surety bond, commitments that they will stand behind us, and a discount that magically expired the same day) and a commitment that the 25-year warrantee covers everything but seismic and trees, Del Rey Paving completed our $72k backyard paver project in September 2023. Over the next few weeks, the pavers began to separate, sag, and crown. Also, the drainage in many areas was toward the house, not away from it. They did come back a couple of times to remove pavers, recompact, and reset. However, when failures continued, they asked us to let the system fail for another year so they would only have to do a major rehabilitation once. When that year elapsed, they were nowhere to be found. Very difficult to get them to come back out. Then, instead of fixing the failed system, they had a soils engineer evaluate. The engineer's soils report described the underlying soils in precisely the way we had described and physically showed them two years prior to the Senior Design Consultant. The report also recommended construction means and methods to properly support various structures, including paving. The report recommendations were vastly different than how Del Rey Paving actually constructed the paving system two years prior. They recently sent an email essentially saying they didn’t want to keep spending money on their failed system. They also claimed the warranties would not cover the repairs. They are attempting to simply walk away, leaving us with an unsafe, embarrassing backyard and a worthless major investment."

Because it’s faster and uses less materials and energy, resurfacing a driveway is more eco-friendly than replacing it. However, that doesn’t mean it’s always the best option. When deciding between driveway resurfacing vs. replacing, it’s important to consider the age of your driveway and the level of damage. If your driveway has only small cracks, sealing them can prevent the damage from spreading. However, sealing the cracks will not necessarily improve the overall appearance of your driveway. For the best final result, fill the cracks first with filler, then seal the driveway and let it cure completely.

Though they may look similar, tar and bitumen come from different sources. Bitumen is a petroleum product—extracted during crude oil refining—and is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. Tar comes from burning down organic materials like coal or wood. Bitumen is strictly oil-based, while tar is a mix of compounds from natural sources. Both are used as binders in paving; however, bitumen is the standard for today’s asphalt. Tar use has mostly faded out of road construction.

Asphalt edging secures the sides of your driveway to prevent crumbling and cracking over time. Most driveways have edges with a 45-degree grading. This helps transfer some of the stress from the asphalt to the ground underneath. If your driveway doesn’t have proper edging, the pressure from your car may break down the edges over time.

Small cracks should be filled with a flexible crack filler, like a rubberized asphalt-emulsion crack filler or a flexible masonry crack filler. Larger cracks need something a bit more solid to prevent further movement and to avoid having to use too much of the flexible filler. For concrete, you can use a concrete backer rod while asphalt can handle sand, gravel, or even dirt.
