"They were really good. The designer came with suggestions and was accommodating to changes we requested. The crew was really nice. They came early and were very informative from the start. As they were laying out the paving, they did a small layout first and wanted to make sure we were happy with the way it looked and again were able to make the paving look exactly the way we wanted. I was very happy with the service."

"The crew was amazing! They were on time, polite, and efficient. In addition to trimming and pavers we had them come and put grass in the back yard for my kids to play on. Sprinkler install and weeds sprayed. Couldn't be happier with the result!"

"we got several bids and first started with the cheapest. We later realized the cheapest did a terrible job on our irrigation system so we fired them and moved to Luis and AZ Yard Doctors. They fixed our irrigation system and did a wonderful job installing pavers and rock. We will hire them again for the next phase! Very professional, they were also very fast to complete but did so with high quality work!"

"We've used AZ Outside Living for 2 different homes and they've done great both times. For our new home, we had them build a paver pad to connect driveway to back yard, build a travertine fire table area, run gas for fire table, install a bunch of plants and landscape lighting, and bring in 30 yards of rock for the back yard."

"Previous landscaper added a patio to my casita but didn't take changing grade of the yard into consideration. It made a d*** causing me to have standing water in my yard by the wall. Esteban Land Design came out to give me an estimate for repair. Esteban is professional, knowlegeable and friendly. He immediately saw the problem and gave me an estimate. Within the week the crew was here and began work on the project. Prior to completion we asked them to put pavers around artificial turf to keep the rocks out of the yard. Esteban again gave me an estimate. They did an awesome job. The foreman Jose was knowledgeable, professional and friendly he walked me around pavers and showed me some small drains they put in so there would not be any water standing in the yard. They cleaned up even though they were not done with the job. They put up trash cans and made sure the gate was closed. Upon completion they cleaned, used leave blower to clean the yard and made sure there was no rocks in the yard. They put back anything they moved. The yard looks great. Esteban is third generation and has been in business 36 years. We would definitely use Esteban Land Design again. Becca the receptionist is awesome in her own right. I enjoyed all the contacts I had with her."
Before Picture: A blank canvas! The entire yard was graded and prepped before additional layers were installed.
Before picture: Starting point! An automatic sprinkler and drip system was installed for the plants that were coming.
We used a unique and special sod for their grass as one of children had allergies. We added citrus trees for the same consideration and also to bear edible fruit!
The patio area was enlarged with a paver border extension.
A paver seating area was created for relaxation and entertainment. To the right is the play area which was created specifically to hold a trampoline and above ground pool. Paver borders and crushed granite were used throughout, bringing harmony and balance to the overall design.

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Grass is the most popular and safest option for planting over a septic drain field, but you can also plant small flowering plants and other lightweight plants that don’t have woody or deep roots. Avoid trees and bushes within 10 feet of the field, as the woody roots can crack the perforated pipes. You should also avoid planting vegetable or fruit gardens over your drain field, as a leak from the pipes could contaminate the soil and put anyone who eats the produce at risk.

There are two main times of year to apply mulch: mid to late spring and late fall. Spreading mulch in mid to late spring helps protect new seedlings as the soil warms up. It's best to wait until temperatures are steady, as mulching too early in the spring can slow down the soil's warming process and hinder plant growth. Fall mulching is also beneficial, as it insulates the soil and helps regulate its temperature when the first frosts arrive.

The best time to plant a tree is in the spring, so the roots have time to grow into the surrounding soil before winter sets in. Some people recommend planting in the late fall. However, planting in the spring reduces the stress on the tree, as it will be emerging from dormancy, giving it the full spring and summer ahead to acclimate and put down roots into the soil.

If you live in an area with heavy rain or you like the idea of an extra layer of cushion under your feet, you may want to consider adding additional layers under your grass. There are pads that are purely for comfort and ones that can help accelerate drainage for those heavy rains.

Consulting your local university extension, Audubon society, or municipal urban forestry program are all good ideas when choosing a tree to plant. You can also ask an arborist or a knowledgeable landscaping company for advice on good trees to plant.
