Hello! We are a 2-person team who specializes in lawn care and maintenance, including lawn mowing, weed eating, hedge trimming, and garden upkeep. We also offer additional services of cleaning out and/or cleaning up sheds, yards, and houses. We may be a small team, but that just means that we will pay special attention to your needs and will ensure that our work matches your expectations. Scooter, the 'S,' has been doing this type of work for over a decade. Scooter enjoys being outside and takes pride in making a lawn look its absolute best. Heather, the 'H,' has been gardening for a little over a year, but is extremely passionate about it and has decided it's the career path that makes most sense to her. She plans on getting a degree in Horticulture in the near future.

Lawns questions, answered by experts

Try the tool test first. A screwdriver or a similarly long, thin tool will work best, as spades and shovels are too big. If something still seems off despite the screwdriver smoothly going into the soil, look for other signs that you need aeration, like thinning grass, discolored areas, and puddles forming on your lawn after light rain. This indicates poor drainage because of too many areas being compacted.

Aerating a lawn before seeding it or adding new grass seed is a smart decision. By loosening up compact soil and allowing it to take in more air and water, your seeds will have an easier time establishing roots and growing. Aerating beforehand also means your seeds will have better contact with the soil, so more of your seeds have a chance to germinate. If you do plan to aerate your lawn before seeding, aerate about two days before you plan to start seeding.

While dethatching first often makes the aeration process faster and easier, both actions can be done on the same day. Aeration can also loosen up the thatch, even if you have a harder time aerating the soil because the thatch got too thick. Because both dethatching and aeration have the common goal of making it easier for the soil to get water and nutrients, it’s safe and possible to do both at the same time.

Your lawn needs to recover after aeration, so make sure the work is done at some point during its peak growing season. This will depend on your region and the type of grass you have, but generally, aerate once or twice per year, either during the late spring, early summer, or early fall.

There are plenty of products to help green up your grass. Try an iron supplement spray or fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen. You can also apply a thin layer of compost on top of your lawn at the beginning of spring to give the grass a nutrition boost, which helps it achieve that bright color you are looking for.
