"I was very impressed with the speed in which they got my roof replacement job done so I could list my home for sale. They were experienced and knowledgeable about how to work with my insurance company, and the new roof is beautiful. They were very easy and cooperative to work with. I can highly recommend this company based on the new roof, downspouts and gutter guard screens they installed for me."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Sometimes, a local authority won’t approve a request for a roofing permit. This may be because of incomplete documentation, unclear project plans, processing delays, or insufficient communication. There may also be discrepancies with building codes.

The easiest type of roof to build is a shed-style or lean-to roof, which features a single sloping plane from one side of the building to the other. Unlike a gable roof with two sides meeting in the middle, a shed roof's single slope makes the construction process more straightforward. The rafters are typically single pieces of wood that span the distance, often without the need for additional supports.

Generally, hailstones that are one inch in diameter or larger can cause significant damage to a roof. However, smaller hail can also cause damage, particularly when accompanied by strong winds, if it strikes an aging or poorly maintained roof, or if hailstorms are frequent in your area. Hail that is ¼ inch (pea-sized) or smaller poses a minimal risk of immediate, permanent damage, but cumulative impacts can cause deterioration over time. The extent of the damage also depends on the roofing material; hail-resistant tiles like slate or certain types of asphalt shingles can withstand impacts better than other materials. If you are concerned about potential damage after a storm, it is always a good idea to have a professional roofer conduct an inspection.

Some people prefer to use connectors consisting of galvanized metal to replace the birdsmouth cuts on the rafter board. Common names for these metal pieces include hurricane ties and variable-pitch connectors. Making birdsmouth cuts is more cost-effective than purchasing these connectors for each rafter. However, because making large birdsmouth cuts to accommodate extra-wide exterior walls can weaken the rafter, a connector may be the better option in some cases.

Yes, moss can be dangerous for your roof if left in place to grow without treatment. The moss soaks up and holds moisture. Having a constantly damp roof could lead to problems with rot for the parts of the roof that consist of wood. Additionally, a patch of thick moss may draw insects and birds, which could damage the roof. Thick moss could block the roof’s drainage system. Water then may back up after a rainstorm and cause further damage that could eventually lead to roof repair expenses or the cost of roof replacement.
