The depth of a septic tank’s drain lines is between 18 and 36 inches underground. These pipes are filled with perforations and surrounded by sand, gravel, or a combination of both, as both materials help filter wastewater. While some pipes are buried closer to the surface, this can create problems unless the soil is compact and doesn’t shift much.

It can take even longer if you face weather-related delays or an inaccessible site that’s riddled with boulders and rough terrain. It may also take longer if you have clay soil, which is more difficult to dig.

The answer may vary based on where you live. Residential sewer lines are generally buried 5 feet to 6 feet under the ground. However, it's not uncommon to see pipes buried as deep as 8 feet in colder climates in order to ensure that piping is placed below the freeze line.
