"Alan came to the house and did an estimate on the spot. Our yard was mostly dirt and tree roots and very sloped. He had some good suggestions on how to transform the yard and worked around the drainage issue we were having with such a sloped yard. I wish I would have took before pictures because the yard has been transformed. He was upfront about the cost and very accommodating when I wanted to add a garden at the last minute. He even surprised us with some beautiful gardenia bushes at the base of the deck steps. Would definitely hire again. His crew worked quickly, efficiently and were very friendly!"

"we have a big job and they've had to come back a time or two to finish some of the area that is not in the direct lines of vision. they were shown what we wanted to have done in the beginning. having to repeatedly show what has yet to be done is a bit frustrating. don't get me wrong. were are very please with what's been done so far. Many times better than the company we used for the last several years. We will ask McKenzie to do our spring mulching and clean up next year, for sure. Responded quickly and manpower was outstanding. our landscaping has never looked better."

Before you begin landscaping with rocks, put down a weed barrier or landscape fabric to prevent pesky weeds from poking through. 

Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.

Buying topsoil in bulk or a bag depends on how much area you’re trying to cover. Even if it goes on sale, bagged topsoil isn’t as cheap as buying it in bulk, but transporting bulk topsoil can become cumbersome if you don’t have the proper truck. If you can find an easy delivery option and have the space to store a large amount of topsoil, buying in bulk will give you more bang for your buck.

A good gravel driveway should be built in layers using different sizes of gravel. A solid base layer of larger crushed stone (around 1 to 6 inches in diameter) provides stability and helps with drainage. Some recommend a middle layer of medium-sized gravel (2 to 3 inches). For the top driving surface, smaller gravel is best. A common recommendation is to use gravel between 1/4 inch and 1 inch in diameter, as it compacts well to create an even surface that's easy to drive on. Avoid stones that are too large, flat, or round to ensure the best traction. Using different layers ensures the driveway is durable, drains properly, and doesn't shift over time.
