Replacing your locks isn’t always a necessary option. You can usually save money by rekeying locks instead of replacing the hardware. You should consider rekeying the locks instead of replacing them in the following scenarios:

  • You want to upgrade your existing locks.

  • You have a lock you don’t want to replace.

  • You recently bought a home and want to change the locks.

  • You lost your key.

Most door knobs can be removed with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. If you don’t have either of those available, a paper clip or small pin can sometimes work, but the extra effort may not be worth a quick trip to the hardware store.

Avoid using boiling water to prevent damage. To prevent future freezing, consider installing a cover or shield over the lock to keep water and ice out. Remember to be patient and gentle during thawing to avoid damaging the lock or key. If all else fails, consult a professional locksmith.
