"Had to replace the A/C unit for our upstairs.. Called a number of contractors to bid it out.. Andersen gave me the best feel in terms of giving me a realistic set of options and not trying to hard sell any one of them(everything from replacing the coil in my old unit to replacing the unit). They also came accross as very knowledgable and trustworthy. I have dealt with a lot of A/C contractors in NWA, and there are a lot of crooks, so price was not my primary concern. However, the price for a new unit was compeititve relative to their competition (14 SEER Lenox with a new furnace).. While they came out and visited the house within 24 hours of my initial call, my one beef with them was that it ended up being a week and a half by the time they got the unit in and were able to install it.. I felt i had to call a couple of times to cajole them to get them out here.. That said, this was following the first warm spell in Arkansas, so i am sure they were busy. After the unit was installed, there was some squeeking caused by a loose baffle. I called them to have them fix it and they were out within 2 hours of the call to address it. Overall, I have been satisified with them and would use them again. Defiinitely my best experience to date and I have used quite a few (Bud Andersen, Bella Vista Heating and Air (avoid), Band B - to name a few)

"Very nice guy came out to check the system. After looking at it he could not figure out the problem, said he had only seen one other unit like it and was not completely sure about working on it. Unit came back on for a short period of time and went back out. Recommended I purchase a new unit for $2,377.00 + tax because it was a old unit any way and charged me a service call of $64.00 and left. We called another company and they found the heat exchanger was bad. They replaced the unit.

"We added a spacious garage to our home and wanted to install a mini split system while relocating our existing air conditioning unit. Since my husband and I were new to mini splits, we had plenty of questions. Taylor the owner of Shaffer’s heat and air was incredibly helpful in guiding us to the best system for our house and garage. They sent Stephen out to handle the installation, and Stephen arrived right on schedule, proving to be both friendly and efficient. The project took two days, and on the second day, Taylor joined Stephen to wrap things up. They worked seamlessly together, completing the job on time with everything looking tidy and well-organized. It's been over a year since the installation, and everything is still functioning perfectly! We will definitely be using Shaffer’s heating and air for our next project! Thank you guys!"

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

Hydronic and standard electric baseboard heaters differ in how they operate, their cost, and their performance. Standard convection heaters use electric coils to heat the air directly, while hydronic heaters warm a contained liquid like water or oil, which then radiates heat into the room.

In terms of cost and efficiency, hydronic heaters usually have a higher upfront price but are more energy-efficient and cheaper to run over time. This is because the heated liquid retains warmth, allowing the heater to continue providing heat for a while after the thermostat turns it off. In contrast, electric heaters provide heat more quickly but are less efficient.

Ultimately, the better choice depends on your priorities. If you need a room to heat up fast and have a lower initial budget, an electric heater might be suitable. If long-term energy savings are more important and you don't mind a slower heat-up time, a hydronic heater is likely the better option.

If you hear your radiator clanking even when it’s turned off, it’s typically because there’s trapped water or air in the system, causing a pressure buildup. When you hear significant clanking, popping, crackling, or banging in a radiator that’s turned off, you’ll want to bleed the pipes or call in an HVAC specialist to deal with the problem (and prevent it from happening in the future).

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than boilers, typically providing three to four times the amount of heat for the electricity they consume. While boilers run on fossil fuels, heat pumps use only electricity. This efficiency can lead to long-term savings on operating and maintenance costs. However, heat pumps have a higher upfront installation price compared to boilers. Despite their lower efficiency, boilers remain a popular choice for many homeowners, with 8 million in the United States alone, due to their lower initial cost and less intensive installation process. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your home's infrastructure, your budget, and your personal heating priorities.

You should get anywhere from three to five quotes for HVAC replacement to get an idea of the average cost of a new unit. Although this quote-collecting process can be time consuming, it allows you to compare what work is required, what type of unit you should install, and how much you should expect to pay for the service.
