"Dave Smith was AWESOME! Very knowledgeable and patient. We added new items to our order at the 12th hour and he came back twice to make sure that everything was completed as we desired. We also had Alarm Protection Group secure our office. Dave Smith and Co. make the process very easy-Highly recommended."

"Our dealings with Protect Your Home/ADT were delightful. We received a call back very fast after requesting a quote through Angie's List. We were able to complete everything on the phone; there was no paperwork or downtime. I had to call Customer Service with a question about the keypad, and they ended up telling me other helpful details on top of my original question."

"I just purchased a new home and needed to get the locks changed. I noticed that some of the locks and knobs were worn and shabby and decided to change them out. I also wanted to change a couple of them to lever style latches to make it easier to get through the door with full hands. Pro Locksmith called me within minutes of my placing my request at Angi. No one else called me. They were able to come out the same day and do this job, which is really unusual these days. We took a look at my various locks, and they recommended that I change them to a well-known, and highly regarded brand. I'd been researching locks a bit, and their recommendation echoed my own. They got the job done within an hour, which included a run to their shop to get the right locks. I received several duplicate keys and tested them on all the locks. They worked perfectly. This is a father and son operation, and have been here for 16 years. I was treated with respect, which I appreciated."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Yes, most pros encourage you to change your locks when you move into a new home. While the previous owner may hand you their keys, you have no way of knowing whether other copies exist elsewhere. Changing your locks as soon as you move in is a great way to ensure that you can enjoy new, fully functioning locks that will work with your unique key or code.

Keyless locks are often considered safer since they’re protected by passcodes instead of a physical key, making it harder to be picked. However, they are not infallible. And like all electronic devices, outdated models are more prone to problems and safety concerns. If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

It’s possible, but depends on the design of your lock. Some door locks that lack a keyhole do boast a small hole on the exterior handle or knob. This hole’s primary function is to allow water to drain out of the lock, in addition to giving homeowners an easy spot to insert lubrication. However, you can typically use a paperclip in this pinhole to unlock the door by manipulating the mechanism inside.

Yes. Most deadbolts purchased from a home improvement store include a step-by-step installation template that is easy to follow, even for novice DIYers. One of the most important steps for successful deadbolt installation is having the proper tools to start with and carefully measuring prior to any attempts at installation.
