"My project was to install a concrete patio to replace a wooden deck that had rotted out. Larry of Young Contracting provided an estimate and made recommendations to improve on my ideas regarding the construction of the patio. The communication from Larry regarding the scheduling, weather delays, etc, was excellent. Good communication has been lacking with other contractors I have used. The patio was completed in one day and the finished product was beyond my expectations. A retaining wall was added with no additional cost charged. Dusty Young, the owner, met with me and went over the finished product. All employees were friendly and professional. Very happy with my patio and the cost of the project. Highly recommend Young contractors for any concrete work. I'm a fan."

"Rose Stone Concrete and Restoration delivered as promised! From the first call until the jobs were finished Rose kept me informed. Hubbard went out of his way to best match the brick needed to replace my old beaten down mailbox. The estimates were fair and very reasonable. He completed the work in the timeframe estimated. The job he did is stunning! I can?t keep from staring at it. From the time he finished and pulled away my neighbors have been stopping by to ask about it and is admiring his work as well as the work effort shown. I feel like I have new found friends as well as a professional company that will get things done without the runaround. They did what they promised and then some. I highly recommend them as I will be using them again as well. They did two jobs for me and both are flawless. Pros at work indeed! Hire them, I promise you won?t be disappointed because of the love and care they put into their work. Hubbard and Rose made sure I was satisfied every step of the way. The attention to detail and the quality of work is to be commended. I have a beautiful new brick mailbox and brick front steps that are amazing! I couldn?t be happier and I am forever grateful. Thank you Rose Stone Concrete and Restoration!"

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

They prevent soil erosion, add flat space, and enhance property aesthetics.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.
