"A couple of weeks ago Cornerstone removed several trees and trimmed several more. Dave and his crew were fantastic. They have outstanding equipment and are very organized in their work. The most impressive part of the job was how they cleaned up everything. They were the only ones who responded to my call. Their was very fair. I would highly recommend Cornerstone for your needs. "Juan and his crew were outstanding to work with. They were kind, respectful, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. They took the time to explain exactly what they planned to do, how long it would take, and made sure everything was organized with a clear plan in place. The quality of their work exceeded expectations. They removed and hauled off all the trees, mowed the lawn, cleared out dead leaves by raking, bagging, and hauling them away, and cleaned up all the vines along the side of the house. They also pressure washed the patio and sidewalks, and trimmed back any branches hanging over the home. Everything was completed thoroughly and professionally, and the property looks significantly better. I would highly recommend Juan and his crew to anyone needing landscaping services."

"I first hired Outdoor Construction Services to install a 70ft x 12ft driveway at my home. I was extremely impressed by the professionalism of this company. They were on time everyday, courteous to our needs at home while they worked, and delivered exactly what they promised. I have since hired them for other excavation/driveway jobs and they continue to deliver each and every time. I highly recommend this company for your needs. You can rely on their expertise and their work. I will continue to use them in the future."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

While you can save some money by digging your own pool, you may end up paying more in construction equipment rental fees in the long run. You could, however, focus your DIY energies on lowering the cost of leveling your lawn for your pool or filling in surrounding landscaping after construction.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

Prior to excavation, you should prepare the dig site and call 311 before you sign anything.

To get your site ready for excavation, you should move anything in the area that isn’t affixed to the land. You can save money on the excavation by removing hardscaping, including walkways, decks, concrete patios, and paver patios.

Before you carry out any digging, you should call 311 to confirm that there are no utility lines running through your excavation site. Skipping this step could lead to severe injury and property damage if your excavator hits a water, sewage, or gas line.

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

Concrete blocks are the cheapest way to base a shed. However, the space in between allows critters to go under, burrow, and even damage your shed’s frame. For a more pest-proof option, consider building a shed base with gravel or paver stones. Both options are fairly affordable and easy enough for a DIY project. For gravel, you can build a wooden frame to contain the loose material.
