Fireplace repair costs around $600 on average, but simple repairs can total as low as $100, while more complex repairs could reach up to $2,500 or more. The specific repair will be the most significant factor. Here are some common fireplace repairs below, along with the average pricing of each:

  • Firebox repair: $160–$2,500

  • Gas valve repair: $150–$300

  • Hearth repair: $150–$800

  • Igniter repair: $100–$150

  • Mantel repair: $500–$1,200

  • Pilot light repair: $100–$350

  • Refractory panel repair: $200–$300

  • Thermocouple repair: $75–$350

  • Thermopile repair: $75–$350

Yes, you can operate an electric fireplace (and other types of fireplaces) without the remote. If you’ve misplaced the remote or are waiting for the replacement to arrive, you can still control the fireplace at the access panel. You can find the access panel near the firebox, typically located at the bottom or top of this section.

Fireplace inserts can increase home value when installed correctly. Since they improve heating efficiency significantly, this will be a bonus to homeowners who are looking for a functional alternative heat source. Plus, inserts are less maintenance and less of a liability than a traditional fireplace. You’re very likely to recover fireplace insert installation costs when you sell your home.

Compared to certain types of firewood like pine or spruce—which burn off sticky resin contained within the wood that creates lots of smoke—elm isn’t the worst option for burning in a fireplace.

Because elm wood is dense, it burns at a moderate pace and does a pretty good job of keeping your home warm. Hardwood like maple or oak may perform slightly better, but elm isn’t a bad choice overall.

Yes, you should seal an unused chimney. Even if it’s not in use, the structure is still susceptible to moisture damage, which can lead to problems like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. But you should also cap the chimney to prevent blockages while still allowing for air ventilation (which also prevents moisture damage). Also, continue to get an annual chimney inspection to prevent other issues with the structure.
