Unlike an urban sewer system that runs wastewater into a central drainage system, septic tanks are a house-by-house system. They are the ultimate destination for all your house’s wastewater—from bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets, and washing machines. Wastewater flows into a tank buried in the ground outside your home, and then water runs from the tank to a drainage field using sloped pipes.

There should be a red button or an on/off switch on or in your box. Press the button or flip the switch, then turn it back on by doing the same action again. If this doesn’t work, reset the breakers inside the box by flipping them off and back on again. After this, your alarm should stay off if there’s nothing wrong with your system. However, if the alarm is still sounding and there’s still a red light on, it’s time to call a pro for a diagnosis.

A septic system inspection costs $100 to $200. Doing so can spot issues early so you can plan for necessary repairs ahead of time and save yourself the issue of a backed-up septic tank. However, older septic tanks installed before 1975 may have only one lid. Because septic tanks last 20 to 40 years, if yours only has one lid, it may be time for a replacement.

You can cover a septic tank riser with dirt, but it’s not always the best idea. If you have a plastic riser and you bury it, you can easily lose track of it since you won’t be able to find it with a metal detector. Make sure to clearly note where your rise is in your yard so that you’re able to access it easily the next time you or a septic pro needs it. Don’t bury the cover too deep or you could place too much stress on it and make it too difficult to access in the future.
