"Subcontractors were mostly good, but management of them was lacking. I had to personally supervise them because the on site contractor rarely stayed very long. Told the trim finish crew to leave because they did not know how to install crown molding. Got another crew that knew what they were doing. They never asked for periodic payments during the job (as is typical); presented one huge bill at the end. Holland homes builds nice homes, but I would not recommend them for small jobs like mine because you do not get the best crews and you have to wait for them to fit you into their schedule."

Sliding doors and pocket doors are both great space savers, but they work a bit differently. A sliding door moves along a track and is always visible, sliding next to a wall or another door. On the other hand, a pocket door slides into a slot in the wall, hiding away completely when it's open. This makes pocket doors a perfect choice if you're looking to maximize every inch of floor space, unlike sliding doors that can still take up some room even when they're open.

First, make sure the couch and door measurements are compatible. Removing the interior door increases the opening if it's a close fit. You may need to turn the couch on its side or move it in separate pieces, if possible. Your best bet is to use furniture sliders to help you slide your couch through a doorway.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. For example, if you're standing on the side the door will open into, the pin should be visible. Be extra careful when installing exterior doors, as placing the hinges on the outside for an outward-facing door makes your home much easier to break into.

Most bedroom doors are 30, 32, or 36 inches wide and about 80 inches tall, depending on the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, and any special accommodations that may be necessary for the bedroom’s occupant. The size of your bedroom door may be larger than average if it leads into a very large bedroom or a home with unique wall or ceiling features.

You want plenty of room between your pre-hung door and the framing in your wall to allow for shimming to get the door into the perfect position, so aim for about 1 inch on the top and both sides. That means you should make your rough opening about 1 inch taller and 2 inches wider than your pre-hung door. You’ll then use shims to stabilize and level the door before installing it.
