"Made the call late Saturday afternoon so I was surprised when they answer the phone. Came out done the job and all was good until they charged $650.00 and then when I went into the bath room the shower was full of black sludge. When he jetted the line (15?) he went from the tank towards the house not from the house to the tank. Now the drains are running slow and am working to get them clean out. But at least they did answer the phone and they did come out, more then I can say for some."

"Mr. Woodard contacted me the day I posted on home advisor. He took me through the process for contacting the health department for appropriate soil testing. Once the health dept ok'd the job he kept in contact with me. It was difficult to schedule the job due to the rainy season in March. But the work was done on the first available day as weather allowed. The crew was friendly & professional and completed the septic system install. Our only disappointment with the job is the fact that the yard was left with substantial trenches because of the wet soil. We were told the yard would be left level and it would be difficult to tell the work was done. The crew told us they would have to come back to level the area when the soil was less wet. This has not happened...even after 3 reminder calls. It is a problem because we listed the home for sale and the backyard is a bit difficult to walk on."

"The technician emptied the freezer, which was in the basement, to work on the part that needed repair. Then he neglected to put anything back into the freezer, including a turkey I had bought for Christmas and a rack of ribs. Two days after he left, I went out of town for two weeks. The turkey actually exploded and spewed its liquid all over everything, which had to be discarded. I let AHS know and they couldn't even bother to call me or follow up on this. I'm considering not renewing my contract with them because of the quality (or lack thereof) of many of the providers they send."

"Quick response, only took about 45 minutes to handle cleaning out the tank. The only issue was the price given on the phone was hundreds cheaper than competition, but when he got there he tacked on another $50 for having to use more than one hose. Which means the price was still fantastic compared to others but that charge should have been mentioned on the phone. I had left a check for the original amount and had to pay the rest over the phone later. All in all you CANNOT beat this company in price and work quality. Definitely recommending to everyone I know!! Will use again when needed!!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Having a well means that a household’s water supply, including water that comes through faucets, showerheads, and appliances, is supplied through a private source rather than from a city. The well pulls fresh water from an underground water supply, such as an aquifer, and the well pump pushes the water from the well to your household.

A septic system can fail for various reasons, and most commonly, excessive water use or sudden surges in wastewater can overwhelm the system's capacity. Neglecting regular maintenance, like tank pumping and inspections, can also lead to clogs, leaks, and eventual breakdowns. Other issues that lead to failure include age-related wear and tear, root infiltration, improper disposal of non-biodegradable materials or chemicals into the system, unsuitable soil conditions, physical damage, and even environmental factors like flooding or soil erosion.

Normally, when your well pump turns on or off, you’ll hear a small click. This isn’t anything to worry about, but it can be a problem if it’s clicking continuously. This can indicate that the well pump is short cycling—the pump continuously turns on and off.

This can wear out the motor and provide uneven water flow. If this happens, you may need to get it looked at by a well pump professional to see if you need to repair the switch or pump.

The average lifespan of a deep well pump is between 15 and 25 years, after which you’ll have to replace it. Several factors can affect the lifespan of a well pump, such as the quality of the unit. Proper maintenance and repair can also help extend your well pump’s lifespan as well as keep adequate water flow and pressure throughout your home.

Wells should be at least 100 feet deep for drinking water, but they may need to be deeper depending on the local geology, water quality, and your household’s water usage. Work with a qualified well drilling professional who can assess the appropriate depth for your well and test the water before drinking it.
