Small jobs welcome

"Shane is an absolute professional and master of his craft. He was referred to me from Mike at Builder's Millwork Supply to make my custom kitchen countertops (he actually is the one who made their displays). Not only is the quality of work excellent... he was timely, professional, polite, down to earth, kept the work area clean (that is hard to find with a contractor in previous experiences) and made sure that my counters were beyond my expectations. I could tell that he really takes his time to be sure his work is perfect. After this experience, I actually hired him to install wall beadboard, kitchen cabinets, and counters in a small rental I own... which he did a fabulous job. Prices are very fair. Highly recommend!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

On average, the cost to hire a carpenter ranges from about $75 to $100 per hour, depending on the type of carpentry, location, size of the job, and skill level of the carpenter. Get quotes from at least three carpenters in your area to determine the best price for your specific project.

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.

If you don’t have a coping saw, you can use an angle grinder to cope crown molding, but it takes a little more precision. Place your molding down on your workbench, angle the grinder at a 45-degree angle toward the molding, and back cut the wood. You’ll need to carefully angle your grinder to accommodate the curves in the wood, and aim to remove around 1 inch from the profile of the molding.

No, you do not usually tip a carpenter for their work. However, if you’ve been very happy with the level of service and quality of work, a 10% to 20% tip would likely be accepted with thanks. If you’re not sure, it can help to discuss the carpenter’s policy or preference for tipping before beginning the project.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.
