"Cody remodeled our entire bedroom and master bathroom completely changing the look and feel to exactly how we wanted it. He redid the long narrow closet into a walk-in closet, replaced the windows, installed a soaking tub and huge shower with two shower heads. The vanity area now has a large linen closet and storage as well. This was no quick and easy project and he handled it perfectly, communication was great, and the pricing was fair. We eve threw a few small jobs at him during the process and he was able to make the time. Before this house I hired him for a full kitchen remodel as well, and it was absolutely gorgeous. He made a tiny space work and feel like it had more room and it flowed much better. It only took two weeks! Cody has been great and we would definitely hire him again!"

"Alex was efficient, professional and friendly and arrived as soon as he could get here. We were having sewer trouble and he stayed to see that the problem was fixed and we were no longer having problems with the sewer, even though it was after dark before he packed up his tools. We would definitely recommend Cothren Plumbing and Construction for any of your construction or plumbing needs."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s always a good idea to keep a box or two of spare tiles after a home renovation project. Tiles can crack from improper installation, heavy foot traffic, and impact from drops. Having some extra tile on hand can make replacement fast, easy, and affordable. Plus, some manufacturers might discontinue particular colors or styles, and slight variations in tile colors between batches could mean mismatched tiles even if your product isn’t discontinued. Having a few spare tiles in storage can help avoid these issues, as well.

Larger tiles can be difficult to install because they’re heavier and bulkier than their smaller counterparts, which makes them harder to haul around and put in place. Plus, if you don’t install the tiles correctly, they could crack or break. For these reasons, it’s best to hire a professional for large-format tile installation.

On average, tiling a bathroom involves about 12 hours of labor, usually spread over two to three days to accommodate prep work and curing times. A professional tiler can often complete the installation in 6 to 8 hours, whereas a DIYer might take 10 to 16 hours. The total project time is influenced by factors like the bathroom layout, tile type, and necessary prep work, such as removing old tile. The process includes specific timelines for different areas; for example, tiling a floor takes about six hours, while a shower area can take six to ten hours. It is essential to allow for adequate curing time—typically 24 hours each—for the mortar, grout, and caulk, which is why the project extends over several days.

If you’re looking for a durable tile for a shower floor, consider porcelain, stone, or vinyl tiles. Each of these options, when installed correctly, will stand up well to everything from water and moisture to the impact from a dropped bottle of body wash. These materials are also easy to clean and maintain, making them popular options for shower floors.

When cleaning porcelain tiles, avoid products that contain ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. Acid-based cleansers can damage the tile, though you can clean them with a diluted mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar mixed with one gallon of hot water. It is important always to use a soft-bristled brush or sponge, since hard bristles and steel wool can scratch the tile.
