Petersen's Flooring and Design opened its doors October 22, 1965 and to this day is still owned and operated by Jim Petersen. We are very focused on customer service and doing the job done right. We do use subcontractors for our installation services, but our installers have worked for Jim for over 25 years and take great care and pride in their work. Some installers are 2nd generation and were trained by their fathers that had worked at Petersen's as well. Petersen's Flooring and Design has a 6000sf showroom that you can use at your leisure. We have everything from prefinished hardwood, resilient flooring, tile(porcelain, ceramic & natural stones), and carpeting as well as laminate countertops. Covering both residential and commercial, we work on smaller residential remodels to large commercial jobs. Our sales and estimating staff come with years of experience, product and installation knowledge, design and construction knowledge as well as plain common sense. Jim started this business in 1965 with "old school values and ethics" from his employees and installers. He expects and demands the same today.

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

To prevent your dining room carpet from slipping, consider using rug pads or grippers underneath to provide traction and stability. Additionally, ensure the carpet is properly sized and secured to the floor to minimize movement. Regularly check and readjust the rug to maintain its position and safety under your dining room table.

You can save money on labor costs by removing your old carpet before the professionals come in to install the new carpet. Just make sure to clear it with your contractor ahead of time. You might also be able to cut costs by buying carpet at certain times of year when it’s less expensive. These periods include late December to mid-January and late spring to early summer.

If you don’t put padding under your carpet, the carpet won’t be protected from wear on the underside. This could result in a shorter life span for your carpet and increased carpet repair costs over time. An unpadded carpet can also be less comfortable to walk on, depending on your subfloor and the type of carpet.

There could be several reasons why your carpet padding has adhered to the floor. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • There was intentional gluing or stapling to the surface.

  • The polyurethane and floor bonded over years of wear.

  • Pet urine, spills, or other substances leaked through the carpet and created a sticky surface.

If the carpeting in the home has not been changed in a long time, clearing off the padding underneath could be difficult. Pet urine can wreak havoc on carpeting and the flooring underneath. If you plan to reinstall carpeting, remember to use proper cleaning techniques for removing pet urine odors to prevent future problems.

A transition piece between carpet stairs and wood flooring isn't always necessary. A transition piece separates two types of flooring in between rooms and areas, like carpet and vinyl. Because the carpet on the stairs tucks into the seam, you can’t see the fringes, and there is no need to hide anything. However, you can use a stair cap if your stairs have a nose.
