You don’t need to drain the whole pool to patch a pool liner, but be prepared to dive in with your swimsuit and goggles to patch a leak below the water level. By draining the pool, you can actually expose the liner to more harsh conditions, like wind and sunlight, that cause the tears to worsen. It’s a good idea to wait at least 24 hours after opening your pool before you swim in it. Pool opening often involves shocking the water, and the chemical levels need to come down a bit before it’s safe to swim. You can continue testing your water pH and chlorine levels if you’re in a rush. It’s wise to wait until your chlorine levels drop to under four parts per million (ppm) and you have a water pH of between 7.2 and 7.8. You can artificially lower your water pH to speed up the process.

You don’t need to dilute the baking soda before adding it to your pool. While you can if you want, adding too much water into your pool can throw off your math and chemicals. Your pool’s circulation system will do most of the dissolving work for you, so it’s OK to skip the dilution.

While some commercial pools are required to run their pump 24 hours a day, homeowners should not. Running a pool pump for 24 hours a day isn’t necessary to clean the pool water—eight hours is enough. Doing so unnecessarily increases your electric bill and puts more wear and tear on the pump and filter, shortening their lifespan.

At noon, when the sun is at its highest point, sunlight can naturally increase the temperature of a pool by 0.7 degrees each hour, but this can depend on other external factors. For example, evaporation caused by the sun will cause a pool to lose up to 5 degrees for every 1/2 inch of water evaporated. Using a water heater will produce more reliable results.
