"The provider requested OK from Choice Warranty and he was denied. It rained last night and rain came into my home. It could have been avoided if Choice had just approved what I requested. Now, the damage will be greater than necessary. I blame Choice home warranty for my home damage. Now it will cost mote than a simple tarp could have prevented until I could get money to repair roof. The provider was great and tried his best to get something done to my roof but Choice Warranty was horrible and no help. They get a "zero" from me"

"We called Machen for an estimate to tear off our old roof on our house and detached garage. They were very responsive and Jodi even came out on a Saturday to give us an estimate. He was very knowledgeable regarding the materials and products we needed, and we were impressed that he actually climbed the roof to take all of the measurements, where other contractors we had contacted did not. The estimate we received was fair considering that the roof deck would need wrapped and the amount of ice guard we needed. Jodi and his team were on time every day and got right to work. They took their time on the job and were very conscientious about the work performed to ensure it was done correctly. Jodi takes a lot of pride in ensuring the job site remains neat and takes a lot of care to ensure they thoroughly clean up before leaving for the day. We ran into heavy rain halfway through the project and Jodi even came out on the weekend to ensure that the roof was water tight before the rain hit. The new roof looks great and we are very pleased with the end result!"

"Contacted me within 24 hours of my website request.  Experienced Contractor came out to inspect roof and determine needed work Contractor took numerous pictures of the roof for the record and shared them with me via the web. Subsequently he gave me the written, detailed estimate to which I agreed.  Work was scheduled and two man crew (father-son) arrived on time and completed job in a timely manner.  All in all a satisfying experience as I have used Roof RX in the past for other jobs and have been very satisfied with the work and their staff of professionals.  Highly recommend.

"I hired this young man without knowing any past history we worked together and I overheard him talking and asked him to do some jobs for me. Without any hassle like you get from these other handymen he kept his word. I need him to replace some shagles on my roof. But my house is very awkward so. We started talking and showed him some other stuff Iwanted done. So he started on that. He rewired my electricity in my basement. He took care of some bad spots I have on my floor. He is pretty much my go to for everything I need. I also have a cabin that he will be doing some jobs there. I gave him 5 stars because he is a professional every sense of the word I would not ask anyone to do anything for me. I will go to him for every job. If he is not on your list as a handman you are missing out."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

You shouldn’t put a new roof underlayment over an old one for a few reasons. Old felt must be removed in order to assess the condition of your roof decking, such as rotting wood or other structural issues. Also, if your roofer doesn't install a fresh layer of felt as is required by shingle manufacturers, your warranty may be voided. Finally, old underlayment removal is often included in the cost of roof repair or replacement, so there's no real benefit to leaving it on before installing a new layer.

If you choose tile for your roof, take the time to hire a true tile professional. Look at trusted online review sites to find a top-rated roofing contractor. This helps you zero in on great contractors while avoiding ones who bait and switch you with fluctuating bids.

After you’ve narrowed down a few great candidates with reasonable bids, there are some important questions to ask roofers before you hire. Be sure they are licensed, bonded, and insured before signing a contract. Once you find a roofer who checks off all your boxes, you’re ready to get your project started.

Yes, removing a chimney is a difficult and major undertaking. Chimneys often provide structural support to a home, so if it's a load-bearing structure, you'll need to take extra precautions to maintain your home's integrity. A project of this complexity typically requires a structural engineer, a masonry contractor, and a demolition crew. The removal process may involve taking the chimney out brick by brick from inside the walls. The cost for chimney removal can range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the job's complexity. Due to the difficulty and cost, some homeowners opt to remove the fireplace and seal the chimney at the top and bottom, sometimes also removing the visible exterior portion at the roofline.

An improperly installed skylight could potentially impact your roof's warranty. This happens because roofing penetration is necessary during skylight installation. Check your warranty information to verify. In most cases, having skylights professionally installed with proof that flashing is being done to specifications can be enough to preserve your roof's warranty.

Roof repairs average around $1,100 but can easily exceed that for larger repairs. The cost of roof replacement depends on the size of your home and the materials used but averages between $4,000 and $24,000.
