"Gus Kayafas was wonderful throughout our project. He gave us several ideas and designed the kitchen in a variety of ways until we finalized a plan that was the 'perfect' one for us. The final product is a beautiful kitchen that we will be happy working in for years to come. We could have hired our own building contracter, but we chose the engineering and construction firm that works with Kayafas Architects. We are are delighted with that firm's quality work. Gus was readily available via email or phone, and even took an afternoon to go shopping with us. We appreciate all he did, and would highly recommend him to anyone."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Regular meetings, reviewing drafts, and providing input on materials help align the project with your vision.

With proper training and experience, reading blueprints is fairly straightforward and not very difficult. If you don’t have the necessary knowledge to interpret the symbols, abbreviations, and other notations used, blueprints may not make sense. Learning to read blueprints can help you understand the construction process and keep you more involved and informed when you’re building a house.

A home elevator is a fantastic way to improve your home’s accessibility. Elevators allow anyone, even those who use wheelchairs or walkers, to safely move between floors within your home.

Dumbwaiters may allow you to move items up and down floors, and stair lifts can move people up and down, but elevators are the best option if you need space for people, their belongings, and/or mobility aids such as wheelchairs.

That said, home elevators cost more than other options, such as stair lifts. Consider your needs and your budget when deciding the best way to make your home more accessible to a person with a disability or a person who is aging in place.

Open floor plans can come with drawbacks—mainly the lack of privacy and noise dampening. Walls act as an important barrier for traveling sounds, meaning in an open floor plan you could hear your dishwasher running while sitting in your living room. Storage limitations and separation of activities (for example, keeping the kid’s playroom away from the dining room) are other reasons some homeowners are opting out of an open floor plan.

Architects bring expertise in spatial design, efficiency, aesthetics, and safety, translating complex needs into feasible, regulatory-compliant design plans.
