Customers say: True professional

"Mike Kinsley was highly recommended and for good reason! He responded to our initial query quickly, came to look at the basement soon after that (while respecting social distancing during COVID), and gave a thorough estimate and honest possible start date. He and his crew worked quickly and skillfully to revitalize our basement after sewage damage, including: building new walls; protecting and sealing walls from future moisture issues; repairing pantry shelves; adding chair rail molding; sanding and finishing stairs; sealing off an unused window; and painting the walls, floors, and ceilings of a bathroom, pantry, laundry room, and rec room. Work was finished within the time estimated and we were grateful for his care around health and safety during COVID. In addition to doing quick and excellent work, Mike was a kind, considerate, and reliable person. If we ever need anything else done, I know who we are calling."

"I was in a sticky situation. My contractor was unprofessional and was overcharging. John stepped in and worked out a reasonable price. His worker Aaron was respectful and lovely to deal with. I live a little far from Morgantown WV. It was part of the contract for me to always be second, but the job got done. I would recommend. John and Arron were very nice to work with"

"Robert Cowell and sons did a complete overhaul and remodel to kitchen. This even included changing the layout from what the cabinet company had designed and has worked out great for my family. Our kitchen is a definite statement piece, as people walk in the house and one of the first comments we here. Would definitely hire again and plan to, for other upcoming home projects."

"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install a summer kitchen or kitchenette in your basement. They serve similar purposes as outdoor kitchens, keeping the main floor of the house cool and providing another space to cook and congregate. Basement kitchens are also a worthwhile alternative for homeowners without much space in the backyard. They come with a few logistical questions to sort out, though, like ventilation and waterproofing.

The average cost of remodeling a basement is $30 to $75 per square foot. If your space is unfinished and looks like it may need more help, use the higher number when calculating your estimated basement remodeling costs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional 20% to the top of your estimate to cover any “what if” situations.

Anything having to do with the structure of your home, such as raising the ceiling, is usually the most expensive part of finishing a basement. Another project component that could be a surprisingly high expense is adding an exterior entrance.

The cost of a walkout basement can be anywhere from $5,000 to $35,000.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

A finished basement does not always count as square footage, as this varies by state regulations. In areas that allow below-grade spaces to be included in a home's official square footage, the basement must typically meet certain conditions. These conditions often include having a functional egress and being a livable space with flooring, finished walls, and temperature control. To be certain, contact your local assessor to confirm your area's specific policies regarding basement square footage.
