It is generally safe to stay in a house with sewer gas for a short time, even though short-term exposure is unpleasant. However, prolonged inhalation can cause headaches, nausea, or respiratory irritation. High levels of methane—which is in sewer gas—can pose an explosion risk in enclosed spaces. A gurgling toilet usually doesn’t mean that your septic tank is full. If waste can’t drain into a full septic tank, you’ll see water and sewage backing up into your fixtures, but the air that causes gurgling is a result of poor venting. You are more likely to have a clog in your vent stack or a damaged air admittance valve.

If your pipes are newly installed, or you recently had plumbing work done, it's normal to have some air in the pipes, which will likely work its way out naturally after using the plumbing a few times. But if you continually hear banging or gurgling due to air bubbles, you might have an air leak, which is best addressed by a plumber. 

To drain a broken toilet, place towels or plastic sheeting around the base in case of splashing or overflowing. Next, shut off the toilet’s water supply, usually via a valve on the wall behind the toilet. Begin flushing the handle to remove as much water as possible from the tank and the bowl. Don’t flush the toilet if it’s clogged, though. From there, use a large sponge to soak up any remaining water and wring it over a bucket.

As that ice thaws, water caught between the faucet, and the blockage causes increased pressure within the pipe, leading to bursting pipes and other serious types of system damage.
